In a bit of a hurry so I didn't read all the threads. Main question is how difficult is it to install injectors in a 2000 7.3? Also where's is the most cost effective place to get Motorcraft injectors? I want to buy this truck but was told by one service tech injectors may need replacing and I don't like the $4200 price tag he quoted. The truck started fine until I got in and it had a rough low idle. I also know it could possibly be a sensor. It stalled twice. Truck sat for two years and owner just drained out fuel to under a quarter tank and added diesel kleen and fresh fuel. It only ran a half hour before I got to it. I had the owner run it one hour with no load and it tried to stall once but never did it again and sounds better with the new fuel cycling through. Does this indeed sound like injectors or something else? Truck has 238,000 miles and is well kept up on and completely stock.
Injectors themselves are pretty straight forward, and can be done in an day. Was the fuel filter changed? If not it should be changed. When it tried to stall what happens? Does it happen quick or sputter? Being that it sat for two years I would say all fluids and filters should be changed regardless.
How did the PO remove the fuel? If he dropped the tank and removed the cover did he say the condition of the tank? It's possible it started to delaminate and could further damage the engine.
He siphoned the fuel. The fuel filter was changed 150 miles prior to being parked. I didn't buy the truck yet it's still over there. It just idles rough and then will give a little surge then tried to stall. One it gets moving it was fine.
He added a treatment and filled up with fresh fuel and each time it is started it balances out more. If it works bad fuel out would this make sense? Without doing damage?
Check the filter and housing. Change it. Don't automatically assume the injectors. They do fail, but a lot of us still have the factory injectors and are still running. (230X,XXX miles as of last May)
No to the tank delamination. The screens inside of the tank could be clogged. When I bought mine it idled fine, just stumbled on acceleration. Fuel pressure was dropping. Quick and easy fix.
So the question is, is it safe to buy this truck and assume I won't have a majorly expensive fix off the bat? Or do we forget about it and move on? The owner is honest and has kept the truck bone stock and in good shape aside from some usual rust on the body. My concern is I won't find another truck with this background in the time period that I need it.
No expensive fix off the Bat?? Nobody in their right mind here is gonna tell you that...We're not there, staring at the truck. Everything about these trucks are expensive, so it's relative. You need to cough up some more info.....How much is he asking? What's the history? and so on and so on....
Not trying to be a hard a$%, But if your buying for $500, it's worth the risk....15,000 not so much....imho
I'm talking expensive as in injectors. Truck hasn't missed oil or filter changes. All stock. Never had a tuner. Hasn't been beat on. All maintenance has been done when it was supposed to by a reputable shop. Interior is flawless. It's four wheel drive. It just sat for awhile and he got as much old fuel out as possible without removing the whole tank. He has been working with me on figuring out it's rough idle while it's still in his driveway. It's been getting better every time it runs and doesn't have the issue at higher rpms.
