3/8 or 3/16? Guy at O'Reillys pulled a 3/8 that looked like a water hose attachment.

The steel tube is 3/16ths, the tube nuts on it are 3/8-24.

That makes a lot more sense. Does it make a difference if the male side is bubbled or inverted?

No, as long as the female side is 3/8-24 inverted flare. Use a copper washer between the brass fitting and the MC so it will seal.
