I was doing the Kijiji search for a wood stove and texting my buddy Siggurd and he cracked about using the old propane tanks and blowing myself up when I realized that I have a wood stove using the tanks. Just need to drain the last liter or 2 out of them fill with water and cut it to shape and reweld it. The tanks are thick enough to hold a lot of heat and the 2nd tank can go in the far corner and will be a heat sink so I won't have to burn as much wood.
We usually don`t get any snow till November either John but it can come earlier. All of my summer toys get tucked away before the snow happens.
Isn`t propane quite expensive Perry? I have fuel oil heat in one shop and gas in the other.
These tanks can't be recertified and they're to rusty to rebuild so I'll drain them and turn them into the stove. It'll look like a oil drum stove or smoker, but there'll be heat exchanger pipes built into the stand and an insulated pipe running a foot off the floor along the wall to the other tank. I'll put some paver stones in the 2nd tank and put a hat vent on the top to slow down the air flow. it won't take much of a fan to power it and the shop will heat up real fast. The main doors will be getting sealed off for the winter so it should be easy to heat. Timber wood is cheap to free for me so I just need to make it efficient.
I've seen and was around barrel stoves and smokers as a kid so it should be easy enough to remember how they were made. Having the 2 tanks and piping should allow me to balance the heat in the shop to get rid of a cold spot or 2.
Wood heat is a lot of work, even tho I have lots of wood I do like the convenience of gas heat.
My bi fold shop doors are the main source of drafts, they`re hard to seal off off.
Would a Sotz stove now pass the safety code?
Unless your buying a certified stove thats under 20 years old you probably are restricted from using it due to particulate count. As for the stove I'd be making, as long as I dont show it off or burn lumber it should be okay. I've got enough paver stones that I can disguise it quite well and make it safe for the cats so that they can keep an eye on me.
Years ago I asked my insurance agent about a shop wood stove which apparently wasn`t a problem if of the approved type. In the house was a different matter, it sounded like my rate would go up and my coverage down.
Wood stoves can be a dangerous thing especially indoors where they're surrounded with wood, which is the main reason why I'l be bricking this one in, a wood stove can crack concrete.
Can't remember the last time that I've seen a chimney sweeper, almost a lost trade. I don't want to use lumber because it smells like a burning house and timber seems to burn cleaner.
