Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Cindy and I just took our first long distance trip with our new Dually and fifth wheeler, from San Luis Obispo, Cali area to Corpus Christi, Texas. One way so far and I have some observations. We went out I40 then south from Amarillo to the coastal bend.
1. The truck pulls Our 15,400 pound trailer with little effort. The 2015 power rating makes it quite fun to drive. Quite an improvement over the heavily modified (bulletproof and tuned) 6.0 we traded in. Going up and over several mountain ranges along the way, this tuck easily pulled the grades rarely shifting back a gear while maintaining the speed limit (75 mph). Gotta love the speed limit, everywhere but California. The manually selectable engine brake worked very well both on the grades and when hauling the combination to a stop. In combination with the tow/haul trans I believe a well thought out setup. The only issue along the way as was the trailer tires. The Goodyear/Marathon tires made in China are not up to sustained speeds above 65 and one let loose in downtown Alberquerque NM on the Interstate at the posted speed limit (65). We got it pulled over to the side, alas there was way too little space and mush to dangerous conditions to change on the roadside, so we slowly pulled about 1/2 mile to an exit and found a place in a commercial building parking lot and changed the tire. We put 4 new LT 235/85R16E commercial tires on in Tucumcari NM (thanks Quality Tire and Lube).
2. Towing with a Dually platform vs single rear wheel platform. IMHO it was far more stable, less wander. Generally we felt safer. I'm not castigating the SRW trucks, just giving our feelings having experienced both. We'll never go back as long as we are towing heavy.
3. We were due for an oil change once we arrived at our destination. Have used Sames
in Corpus Christi before and they did their usual great job. Oil and fuel filters this time (16,400 miles). I switched to full synthetic oil on my first oil change (Chevron). The Ford dealer used Royal Purple, I was a bit surprised as I expected Motorcraft had a full synthetic oil for the diesels. I didn't ask and am not worried, Royal Purple is good stuff as far as I know. Also got the dealer to check the coolant additive, which checked ok and they killed the "Check Coolant Additive" light. Overall we are quite happy with our new Dually and its capabilities.
