I grind off the insulation of regular connector: crimp, solder and shrink wrap.
This is how I do it, but I just clamp the connector in a vice and pull the plastic off.
It is sad that the only way to buy quality connectors is online. Every store in America sells the cheap-o's but not the good ones. It does seem like the NAPA stuff is a little better than average, though.
I used to do that, but the red ones are such a pain! I use them the most.
Radio Shack sells a $2 pack of non-insulated butt-splices, makes life quick and easy.
I rarely use them anymore, unless I'm crimping a 12G wire.
Then its a non-insulated splice, hydraulic crimper, solder, and heat-shrink.
I'm also working on seeing if I can hack the 3 speed motor out of this Taurus fan (bottom) into this 2 speed MKVIII fan body (top). Stay tuned. Motor dimensions are the same, but the drive flange is different. Grinner, thats your alternator too.
I saw that one on Amazon for$100ish for the digital read out. On my list if things to get. Thanks. And so ya all know this is the thread I'm most interested in.
Hey guys, 'just wanted to let you know I picked up a Weller WES-51 based on fmc400's input and yes, it's a nice, lightweight soldering iron. It maintains heat very well and also has an indicator light to let ya know that it is ready.
Glad you like it. I have been really happy with mine. Probably my favorite part is the coiled iron holder, so you don't have to worry about laying it somewhere and burning stuff.
I've been slacking. I need to get my own soldering gun.
Wyckedcombo my 3G worked out pretty well. Tried to take out the extra wires and brain farted and pulled the +key on wire. I will eventually take out the extra wires once I get my own gun.
Then to the head lights.

FYI....I posted a link in the 3g "super thread" to a voltage regulator that is compatible with a 3G swap and allows you to keep a functioning ammeter.
I can't even begin to thank you guys enough for this thread. I just started dismantling my 89 today in order to put my 78 cab on it, Holy xxckfay the wiring harness looks intimidating to someone like me. EG fuel injection, pollution control sensors, etc. Seeing as I know that an honest mistake is easier to accept than a stupid one, I intend to keep every thing intact and tie it to the motor on the side that it came from and yes I'm taking pictures and labeling even the obvious plugs that I disconnect (washer fluid reservoir). The only place that I intend to disjoin the harness is at the firewall plug. I'm also going to keep everything complete in the cab upto and including the part it's connected to. What I'm doing may be redundant and time consuming, but I'm not smart enough to chop it up and put it back together. One place that I know where I'm going to have a problem is with the steering column. My 78 only has the signal arm, emergency flasher and horn on it and I'm keeping it. the 89 has the key switch and a lock on it and I find it irritating. Am I justified in being worried or am I giving myself an headache ? I hope you guy's don't mind if I subscribe to your thread, but for me it's a brain saver. Again, thankyou for having this thread. Perry
Ted-.......DOH! I've already started making a shroud for the taurus fan, but that volvo is pretty cool. Thats quite a difference in length! My application should be okay as I only have a 2 core radiator, but I can see it for other guys. For those of you interested, the taurus has a different drive tang compared to the mark viii.
Joe-Glad it worked out! What extra wires do you have? I just left em there. It aint a show truck
Perry- You'll get more results if you post a thread thats dedicated to your topic. Anywho, is your question about the lock on the column? None of the trucks of this generation have one, and you can do many other things for theft deterrence, so you should be okay without it.
Thanks for the advice Wycked, I was just worried that there might be some sort of an ignition sensor, safety switch that would prevent me from starting the truck when I sell or toss the steering column. The last thing I want to see in my 78 is a 89 column. I've got a thread 'retirement project', but due to health problems I some times have to change my work sched. Some days I get next to nothing done, other days I kick a$$. The next day or 2 is light strip down on the 89 chassis thats why I asked. Sorry about hyjacking the thread. Keep up the good work, it's nice to see people brave enough to take on electrical challenges like you guys do.
