I'm darn close to being in over my head and need this as a daily driver,
Assistance will be requested and appreciated. Love the soldering jigs & tips
My advice would be to get a junkyard harness out of a 79 and go through it, then swap it in. It is far easier than trying to fix stuff under the dash of the truck.
on the top picture the disconnected grey connector has three wires:
red with yellow strip
red with black strip
black
the wire on the bottom that has the 90 degree snap-on connector that is loose appears to be black bur has a red-ish tint?
I tried wiping the wire off but it be a red wire thats been burnt or in may just be an old worn black cable. I know that probably does not help.
I think its black.
The wire on the bottom, the one thats a 90 degree is either the wire for the temp sender or the oil pressure sender. Clean it off, if the wire is white w/ red stripe its for oil pressure, red w/white stripe it for the coolant temp.
I'll look and see if I can tell what that other plug is for, I'll let you know.

WOW that wire was really dirty... It would not wipe clean with my fingers. But some some carb cleaner cleaned it enough that I could see it better....It is red.
where does the oil pressure sensor wire go? I do not see any connectors sticking out. Ive looked around the oil pump and filter. but the wire is too short to run that far.

to the left of the oil filter (if your at the DS fender) is a bolt with a hole...should there be somthing in there?
That's the oil pressure sending unit. The one pictured is for trucks that have an oil pressure gauge. If you have an oil pressure warning light it takes a different, smaller sending unit.

I'm thinking Laz was saying red, as in with the white stripe, and the location of the plug (picture is sideways judging by the dizzy under your finger tips and the top rad hose that you hand is against) that would be for coolant temp guage.
Is that an aftermarket temp guage in the truck under the dash left of the steering? In the other picture it looks like there is an armored mechanical temp guage tube running in the firewall hole with the plug pushed in, the one to the left of the main harness plug. My guess would be someone disconnected the factory temp guage and put in an aftermarket one. Does the dash guage work?
The oil pressure sending unit on a 78 400 is located on the top center backside of the block behind the intake.
Thanks Ranger, thats what I thought but wasn't sure, I haven't owned a 351M-400 since 1980 . When the OP posted about the "hollow bolt" I got sidetracked (a symptom of age?). But you're correct, the wire he's holding is probably for the temp sender because he described it as red. If it was for oil pressure the OP probably would have said it was white.
