Yep, that's about what I figured the difference will be between the clutch et al, and I was considering worst-case, and the diff. Pretty close in other words. But, as I said, Rusty will be the better for it as he'll not only have a known-good clutch, but also a good diff and new lubes. I'm hoping to make him good and solid to make up for his ugliness.
I already have the 80/90W, but thanks for the offer. What brand is your 10W30?

It is a synthetic blend of Conoco. They do a better job of blending their oils than most of the bulk distributors in our area. I did quite a bit of research regarding the quality of bulk oils b/c the pricing was all over the place with different brands. When examining the literature and specs it was blended to this oil is of a better quality than most of the major brands sold at parts stores(ie.Valvoline, Q state, Castrol) and it still has all the Zinc in it. I bought it right before they started taking the zinc out of motor oil. I didnt know this was coming it was sort of dumb luck. I paid $1.25 per qt. The drum was $275.00. I just priced another one b/c the 15W40 had been going up and I wondered where the pricing on the gasoline engine stuff was at now. They told me a little over $400 for a drum of 10W30 currently. So far I have only been using 3-4 gallons of 10W30 per yr. So I dont know if that stuff will go bad or has a shelf life , but , if it does I wont be able to use all of it before it does.

Conoco? Where have I heard that name? Oh yes, you mean The Continental Oil Company, HQ'd at 1000 S. Pine, Ponca City, OK. At least, that's what I was told to call it when I hired on with them in '69, and where I worked for 22 years before DuPont bought them. The old timers would NOT let us call it Conoco. But, you probably mean Conoco-Phillips as you surely bought the oil after the merger - right?
Didn't have much time today between church functions, but did pull the clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate. Attached is a pic of the rear of the engine after minor cleaning, and you can see that it is slightly cleaner than the rear axle.
What I've learned with the initial measurements is that this flywheel is the same OD as the 460's flywheel: 15 1/2". But, the clutch on Rusty is an 11" unit and, given where the flywheel is drilled it won't accept a larger pressure plate. So, one approach to use the ZF5 would be to buy a 12" flywheel and pressure plate for the 351M/400 engine, and hope the 12 1/4" clutch plate from the 460/ZF5 will fit. I think it will because it would be possible to squeeze an 11 1/2" clutch under Rusty's 11" pressure plate and just miss the mounting bosses of the pressure plate. Yes, 1/4" of the clutch disc wouldn't be in contact with the pressure plate, but it wouldn't hit anything.
More measurements to come, but I'll probably be posting them in Dad's Truck Build post.
You got the back of the motor looking pretty good Gary!
Really didn't have to do much. There was some debris on the ledges, and a little bit of oily grunge, but in comparison to the rear axle it was clean.
One thing I realized in looking at the 351M from that angle is the big difference between the driver's and passenger's side exhaust manifolds. Or, maybe I should say in the angle of the exhaust pipe. I'm used to the SBF exhausts which are basically at the same angle side-to-side. Not so on these engines, as can be seen in the picture - major difference.
Somewhere I read that the exhaust manifold for these engines on one side on a pickup is different from any other application. If that's true I would guess it is the passenger's side manifold, as it really sends the exhaust off almost horizontally instead of the more vertical style on the driver's side. And, while this isn't something that is easy to spot, like the # of valve cover bolts, it is another way to determine if you have a 351M/400.
Got the rear axle cleaned today. Here are some before and after pics:
Somewhere under there should be u-bolts for the springs:
And, here's most of what came off, with the rest in the far corners of the shop I'd imagine, and the brake drum is to give the pile some point of reference:
Yuckk!!! I think this truck's name should be changed from "Rusty" to "Crusty"!
Yep CRusty is feeling much better. Not only has he shed several pounds but he also has a rebuilt differential in his rear. And, he has better axles, or maybe I should say axles with better splines. All of that's been installed and, after the RTV sat for more than an hour, torqued down. Tomorrow I can pour the 80/90W in.
Now I'm measuring the various dimensions re his flywheel et al. And, in doing so he got another upgrade - to four bolts holding the NP435 to the bell housing from three. One of the bolts, an original, had been cut off at the head. So, it wasn't long enough to get a nut on once the bell housing is in place. I was able to get a nut hammered on and the bolt came out nicely. And now the bell housing is on properly so I can measure things.
Since I think I got all the measuring done on Rusty today, which what I did with one of my trucks, I'm ready to start putting him back together tomorrow. Still have to drain and refill the tranny and fill the rear axle and t-case once everything is back together. But, maybe he'll be on the road on Friday.
I rustled up a pony drum in excellent condition today. I will leave the cleaning to your liking . It had some old solvent in it, but , I poured it out. I will be at the shop in the morning so I can take a pic of the label on the Conoco drum in order for you to research it Gary.
