No no . Lesters has the washers , but , not the gasket. They reccomend RTV in place of the gasket. O'Reilly's has the gasket . That is the part number I gave you for a fel pro 9" diff gasket. They do not have the right copper washers at O'Reilly's. They sell a variety pack of copper washers with several different sizes in them. They have the right size copper washer in the variety pack , but , only 2 per package. So you would have to buy 5 packages to get 10 copper washers.
So in a nutshell Lester's has the copper washers. O'Reilly's has the fel pro gasket part # RDS 55074. Call your store and order that part number. They will have the hub at 46th and memorial send the Fel Pro gasket (part # RDS 55074) to Podunk O'Reilly's for you to purchase there. You can also trade your hides there for sorghum molasses and some flour.

Gary, you mentioned cleaning the BW1356. Which of your trucks has a 1356?
Neither. It came with the ZF5 off of a '90 F350. Don't think I'm going to use it for three reasons: First, I think it will require a different front drive shaft and maybe a different rear shaft as well, but I will check that out. Second, the PO said it kicks out of 4Lo into 4Hi when you back up, so something is wrong with it. Third, it hangs out soooooo far to the rear that it looks like it needs another support. In fact, somewhere I heard that they break due to the lack of support.
So, at this point I'm planning to sell it and the NP435 when I get Dad's truck finished.

His office is a strange , but , interesting place. He has all kinds of model cars and such, antique signs and apparently he collects old toys and lunch boxes.
You mention that your parts washer clogs.
I never ran simple green in my second hand SafetyKleen parts washer, always the solvent type fluid.
But, I found I could pull an old tube sock over the pickup in the bottom of the cistern.
When it would start to slow down I'd just pull the sock off and change it for a new one from the rag bin.
Probably increased the life of the pump impeller too, not having to deal with all the junk that got caught.
Jim - The parts washer has a three-stage filtering system:
A stainless grill in the bottom of the basin that would probably stop BB's.
A mesh basket below the grill that catches things as small as sand - maybe smaller.
A house-style water filter with a string-wound filter cartridge. I've tried different levels of filtration in this, and have settled on a 10-micron cartridge.
It was the mesh basket that clogged today as the grunge coming off the t-case was awful in spite of having scraped off all I could before putting it in the washer. But, all I had to do was to turn the pump off, move the brushes and other tools out of the way, and then pull the grill and mesh filters. The deep sink is only about 3' away, so I just run hot water backwards through the mesh basket and the yuk goes into the sink. Drop those two filters back in and away I go.
Not sure a sock would help much in that system. What do you think?

I assume you mean that I should call him the morning I'm coming after the diff, whenever that is, rather than tomorrow morning. Right?

With my old parts washer there's only a fine stainless screen that is held up out of the bottom of the tank by 3 or so inches.
It's difficult to clean out if it clogs.
The sock comes right off.
Yes,the morning you pick it up. I think he is still waiting to have the clean up and paint job finished before he reassembles it. I talked to James about it today. He told me they had been pretty busy at work and hasnt had the opportunity to throw it in the parts washer. The parts washer does a fantastic job on the diff housing as well as the gears and other misc parts. Thats pretty much mandatory to get the gears looking great for a big dose of the new gear before assembly. He should have it in and out by Thursday night. I will say Friday for an ETA, but , will let you know for sure when it is complete.
Bruno tells me the diff will be ready tomorrow evening, so I'll go down and pick it up on Friday. The only issue is that James, the guy that rebuilt the diff, says it would be a good idea to swap the axles with the ones from the parts truck due to the splines on Rusty's axles being worn.
So, I'll pull those axles and hope the bearings are good. Otherwise I'm going to have more invested in Rusty than I'd planned. But, I do want him to be solid.
Bruno - You may want to update your telephone #'s: Richard is at the axle shop and the # is 918-425-7725. But, he's out of the copper washers and sent me to Danny's Differentials for them. Called them and Danny said it is "just a 3/8" banjo washer like used on brake banjo bolts" and that he gets them at the parts store for $.99/ea out of the Dorman drawers.
O'Reilly's had already told me they had kits of several different sizes, so I called another store and all he had was a kit that has 20 of the 3/8" in it for $15. And, while that isn't bad considering I'd have enough for two 9" diff's, it rang a bell and I looked in my "supply". Sure enough, I have a Grip 100 PC Copper Washer Assortment that includes twenty 3/8" washers. So, I guess I'm set.
As for the gasket, I called O'Reilly's and gave them the part # (RDS55074) and they have it in stock here in Podunk. Apparently their 'puter doesn't list the 9" gasket correctly.
Gary, I've learned that oreilly's system fails to have some items listed correctly. I use other sites to look up numbers, and then search the number on the orielly website. Quite often, I find they have it, even though the puter don't list it.......
Got the rear axle cleaned today. Here are some before and after pics:

Sure enough, the vent hose was missing, the vent itself was plugged, and there was a teeny bit of gunk:
And, here's most of what came off, with the rest in the far corners of the shop I'd imagine, and the brake drum is to give the pile some point of reference:
Now I can put the diff in with a good conscience. But, Bruno's friend said I should also put axles with better splines in if I have them, so I pulled the axles out of the parts truck to see. Luckily their splines are good and the bearings are as well, so I'll put them in instead of the worn ones that came in Rusty. And, it looks like the seals on them must be ok as the axle on the parts truck was relatively dry.
I think I'm to pick up the diff tomorrow, so maybe I'll have the axle back together early next week as we are going to see Dad on Saturday. Then a bit of measuring on the clutch et al, put the tranny and t-case back in, and take Rusty for a long-awaited drive.

I think your mpg theory might be contested. Now with all of those sharp areas and surfaces exposed the truck is going to have more drag against the air. With all of the gunk on everything the truck could have been more aerodynamic.
