i dont know anyone that carries spicer.. i think NAPA reboxes spicer balljoints for their premium line, at least I've heard this before? Though advance sells moog.. everyone loves moog.
and don't get greasable, the joints are drilled through the centers so you can fill with grease and this weakens them considerably.
Remember i don't have advanced here... I went over to the big Napa warehouse and they were able to match all 3 for me. But i had no idea there was something called a CV ball joint in the center of the double cardan joint.... now i have to wait till tomorrow to go back to napa and buy the rebuild kit cause i don't have the spring and ball and i don't have this little retaining ring thingy... I also have to figure out how it goes back on cause i wasn't expecting it to just plop out when i got the u joint off. Man this is just dragging on, also my transmission never got worked on as far as i am aware so i have to wait till tomorrow when the guy can get back to the shop and do it. Also i already bought grease ables...
All in all this is def not something i want to do again in the future, unless it is just 2 simple u joints to do. And as for the transmission i think it might be better to see how much someone else would charge to pull it next time cause this time was just crazy.
ZGood luck on the CV ball.. my nickname for it is "Bronco Killer". I imagine hundreds of Broncos have juunked just for that stupid CV ball! you can't buy a proper seal for it, it doesn't handle extreme angles, the aftermarkets don't last..
look, in the beginning, I wish I had just bought a rebuilt driveshaft from broncograveyard. Figure how much you have into it and decide if you should just do the same.
I have about $56 into it i think for the u joints. The problem is i need this done as soon as possible and if JBG's shipping is as bad as i have seen from here then it could take too long, I am hoping to have the tranny back tomorrow and need to get everything prepped for re installation of it which was why i started on the driveline. Plus it squeaked pretty bad. I noticed on of the caps was broken, literally. I can go price one up but i don't know yet. It might be worth it.
I looked up a driveline on JBG and i didn't see a rebuilt one but the 2 i saw were both a little over $200. I don't think i will be buying one cause i really need to save as much as i can now.
Ok so turns out the tranny guy was wrong i have the NP 203, which takes 80/90 gear oil. Got the new seal and the transmission back he gave me a dieing bill of health. The olf internals were shot, he said he took them out from the housing and straight to scrap cause they were in such bad shape. So i got new stuffs and i am happy. He also gave me a pretty much full can of brake cleaner to spray into the tranny cooler portion of the rad then use an airgun to blow out any metal that could contaminate the fresh ATF. This guy is really a cool guy. I plan to go to him next time i have any issues with my tranny or t-case.
Edit: Forgot the pics.
This is them, You can compare to the surroundings how big this stuff is.
This is the badge on the t-case with the info. I didn't eve know about this till my brother pointed it out.
Edit edit: I just noticed the transmission its self is about as big is our lawn mower in the back ground...
glad to hear things r startin to goin for ya man. and no one got hurt when the tranny fell off the jack. i had something similar happen when i took about my e4od but the strap ended up breaking, now i have a badass scar on my right hand.
those cv joints sound like a pain (never have done em myself) gotta let us know how it goes.
Sorry to hear that 95DB, I did the CV joint and it was cake, you just pull a little red stopper thing out and slide it into place, but you have to keep it upright in order to have it stay in, being spring loaded it will fall back off. The joint wasn't my issue though my issue is the damned u joints, napa got my joints wrong so now i ordered different ones. This is the 4th time this has happened now and i am getting fed up with it all. I really wish i could go back in time and stop myself from buying u joints and just buy a new drive line. Oh well, live and learn i spose.
I fought and fought with my 78 and the u-joints. I had some sort of B@ST@RD joint with different cap sizes...I had to try a dozen or so before I found the correct fitting joint...then my leafs were wore out so the axle wrapped and blew the rear joint every few days....Good to hear you seem to have things going together pretty well, tho.
Ya i finally got the right ones and only spent about 10 minutes in napa before i had the right number and one of the joints (had to visit another store for the other) But the guy behind the counter was a different one and he pulled out their book and flipped to the back where they have measurements for the caps, then he took a measurement of the cap i needed and found the u joint part number i need. Then it took me probably 20 minutes to get the 2 joints in. I am glad i am finally done with that ordeal, this weekend is tranny installation time. I pretty much have everything i need now, and the only thing i need to do is get it up under the truck.
Ok picture time
Here is the CV ball joint in the center of the cardan joint. I dind't have the spring for this and there was one needle bearing missing, so i bought a new one.
Now these i have no idea what they are for, they aren't connected to anything and are near the rear axle on one of the body crossmembers.
This is the new u joint that was the final correct one. The other one had a groove in the caps on the long side and were like a tenth of an inch bigger or so.
This is a part number to try if your in search of u joints and your visiting the part store. see if they have one and try to see if it fits.
This is the turd causing so many problems,
The middle u joint there went in fine and was correct but the other 2 were wrong.
Since that stuff is done me and my step dad did some redneck metal repair by using the 4wd shift lever to un-bend my tranny dipstick tube. So far thats it for TGM, i have a friend who lives down the street with an orange 88 xlt and he was out screwing around on a hill and backed into a tree. He has been on a manhunt for a new tailgate and thinks he found one, plus i have been helping him with his winch to get it untangled and reeled back in.
Man, ok so i got my tranny in with slight problem but now i can't get the stupid t-case on. We just can't seem to get the danged thing on out tranny jack level enough to slide it onto the spindle. We almost had it a few times. We decided to not put the t-case on before putting it in cause it would have been really heavy. I am not thinking it was a bad idea. I will try getting pictures but no guarantees.
