It has been proven time and time again you can run nothing but dino oil in an engine (changed in proper intervals) and have an engine that lasts a LONG time. Even the cheap dino oils have cleaners/detergents in their additive packages. Synthetic oil has been known to clean very well however for the part all major brands do. That said synthetic oils still clean gradually. If you have a dirty engine its could take tens of thousands of miles and a dozen oil changes to clean things up nicely. Gradual cleaning is better than "shock" cleaning IMO.

My personal opinion: I usually use what ever name brand "full synthetic" is on sale.
Same here. I primarily use Pennzoil Plat.

Well, I never intended this to be an Amsoil discussion forum, as all I was doing was trying to help a guy who hasn't ran his truck in 3 years!

But, since we're talking Magnson Moss, that is why I said that Amsoil has their own warranty, to superscede any OEM warranty, that the manufacturer feels might be compromised due to the use of Amsoil.

And, I've taken a tour of Amsoil's facilities (during their 35th anniversary celebration a few years ago), and I can say that they have a 'state of the art' testing facility. ALL tests that are done, are done to ASTM specs. I'm sorry if you feel that the tests are tainted, but I can assure you, they aren't! All the ASTM letters/numbers following such tests ARE actual tests from the ASTM! What I don't understand, is where are the test results on the back of Mobil 1, Castrol GTX, etc.? Amsoil is proud to have their test results printed on either the back of the quarts, or on the case itself. I still haven't seen ANY Mobil 1, or other oil manufacturer (especially Royal Purple!) post theirs! The reason why I say Royal Purple, is usually their results are at the bottom of most of the ASTM tests! ASTM IS the industry standard of tests, so why isn't anyone else publishing theirs?

Now, I really wish I did save all of the oil analysis results that I have obtained over the years, but I quit having my oil analyzed after a constant stream of results saying that after around 15k miles, the Amsoil was about same as dino oil after 3k. So, I started recommending 15k oil changes to my customers after seeing that trend. Amsoil did finally start with the 15k oil change as 'severe service'. But, I've been doing that 10 years before they came up with that! Unless you install the bypass filter system that Amsoil offers, I only do recommend 15k oil changes. Now, if you do mostly ALL highway driving (like my wife driving 140 miles a day), I can recommend 20k oil change intervals, as long as you change the Amsoil oil filter halfway in-between. If one can actually find enough room in today's cars/trucks to install the bypass filter system, then 25k or more oil change intervals can be realized with no problem, especially if you do all highway driving! But, the industry standard for yearly driving is around 12-15k, so no one would spend the money for the bypass system, as Amsoil also recommends a 1 year oil change interval.

And, yes, I've been all over 'Bob the oil guy's website, and I know what you are talking about. There are many good oils out there, but for me, and my customers that only want to change their oil once a year, to avoid the hassle and inconvience of oil changes, Amsoil is the only one I'll use! I'm even an owner/operator, and own a '95 IH 9400 semi, with the 12L 470 HP Detroit engine, and that had over 500k on it when I got it. I use Amsoil (AME) 15W-40 oil in it, and especially for a Detriot engine, I use NO oil whatsoever in between filter, and/or oil changes. And, I change filters at 15k, and the oil at 30K! If I can trust Amsoil for my 'work truck', that I depend on to make my living, I think it will be just fine in someone's car!

I've been using Amsoil for over 20 years, and have NEVER had ANY oil related engine, or trans failure while Amsoil has been in such vehicles!

Unfortunately, we can keep going on the subject all day, but I DO have a life, and I have to get on with it.

But, thanks for writing!

John

One last thing before I HAVE to get going, is that Chris wrote me back, from Carbibles.com, and said this:

Hi John
Personal experience from wrenching with a mechanic for a few years but that was in the mid 90s. Now that doesn't mean it's the right way to do it, it's just what I was used to. Reading through what you say it does make more sense to me though. I'm always adjusting and updating the info on my site - it seems like this is probably something I should correct.
Thanks for the heads-up. Sadly I have so much info there now that I have to rely on other people (like you) finding errors to keep me up to date.

Chris Longhurst.

I'm glad I was able to help set him straight!

John
