I've been posting some questions in the Oil forum but I wanted some V10 specific opinions. I want to switch to full synthetic oil but the brand I want to use doesn't offer full synthetic in 5/20. They offer 5/30 and recommend using it in place of 5/20. The brand is Schaeffer Oil and have more than an excellent reputation as an oil manufacturer. I can get it for a discounted price which is a little less than buying motorcraft off the shelf.
I would not hesitate to use the 5W30. The early V10's called for 5W30. Then Ford released their 5W20 and changed the recommendation for later years.
Several of us did research and could not find any changes to bearing clearances or other oil weight sensitive design changes.
My dad was using over a quart in 3k miles. I changed his PCV valve for him and the consumption went to next to nothing. The truck had around 75k on it at the time.
A co-worker just switched to Schaeffers Supreme 7000 5/30 para-sythetic in his wife's 5.3 liter Chevy and said it used a quart and a half in a short period of time. Before he switched it used very little oil if any. I'm wondering if the synthetic oil loosened up some gunk and caused PCV failure. He was gonna ask the Schaeffers Rep next time he stops by the shop. I'm probably gonna go ahead and run the full synthetic 5/30 in my V10. Costs me the same as store bought oil, so why not use the full synthetic. Plus I get free oil analysis.

You are probably right, in that 'gunk' has gone into the oil filter, and plugged it up. I've ran Amsoil for over 25 years, and I know from personal experience, if I do not flush the engine first, the vehicle will use oil after a while, until the filter is changed. Depending on how much gunk the engine had in it, will determine how long it will use oil. You might end up changing a couple of filters, before the consumption stops. That is why I always recommend to customers that they buy the flush, and use a cheaper oil filter, to flush the engine before installing synthetic oil.
Just so you know, Amsoil does make both a 5W-20, and the better "Signature Series" 0W-20 full synthetic oil that will be compatible for your engine. I use the Signature Series 5W-30 for my '98, and even though I've been running Amsoil in it since it only had 20k on it, it will still use a quart after 5-6k miles.

Thanks for the idea. I might change mine, since I don't think I've ever done it! And, the engine has 111k on it!
I'm using Schaefer's 5W20 and really like it. An oil analysis showed I can go about 8k miles between changes.
I also picked up about 0.5mpg improvement. One of these days I'll post my data...
I haven't been on here in a while (obviously), but I also used to do oil analysis with my V-10, when I was using it as a company vehicle, and putting a lot of miles on it. With using Amsoil, and Amsoil oil filters, I could easily go 15k between oil changes, and the analysis showed as much. Basically, it showed 15k being about equal to 3k on dino oil. So, the higher price of the Amsoil wasn't even a consideration, since I could go 5 times longer on oil changes. Not to mention the convience of not having to change it as often, and since I do it myself, not having the used oil is a plus!
I now just do Amsoil's recommended 1 year oil change, as I don't put hardly any miles on it anymore. I only use it to tow my boat in the summer, and to drive back and forth to my semi in the winter.
