I have a 99’ F-250 with a 6.8L V-10 (bought it new 11 years ago), I’ve always had a oil change place or a dealer do the oil and other fluids. The price was never too far out of line, however I’m down in $outh Florida most of the time now so I would like to start doing some of the oil changes my self from time to time and was looking for some recommendations on oil and filter brand.

Cold and high altitude is not an issue. I have been using Texico 10W30, not sure on the filter.

Bought a Fram PH2 filter at pep boys tonight.

Any recommendations on oil or filter brand / number or links web sites / forums would be helpful.

Thanks,

SG

I use Motorcraft oil filter FL-820S and Mobil 1 synthetic 5W-20. You could also use Motorcraft synthetic blend 5W-20. Both can be obtained cheaply at Wally world. Mine takes about 6.5 qts. or so.

I use Motorcraft synthetic blend 5W-20. Along with a Motorcraft filter. People on here may chime in and for some reason, alot will tell you not to use a fram oil filter. I do not know the exact reason but enough have said not to, so I do not.

Don't use the basic PH2 Fram, use the TG2 or XG2 which are both more expensive.

They have the silicone anti-drainback valve, while the PH2 does not. The Ford manual says FL-820S Motorcraft filter, the "S" stands for silicone anti-drainback.

I won't get into Fram vs. anything else, I've used Fram all my life, still do and never have an issue with drainback or anything else. But I won't use a regular PH2 on my V10 for the above reason.

For a filter it is a no brainer to use the Motorcraft FL-820S filter. It has the silicone anti-drainback valve the modulars require, is priced well under $4 and is widely available. Your 99' speced 5w-30 from the factory. I would use 5w-30 but thats just me. Any oil that meets the manufacturers specs will work fine. Brand is up to you.

I use the Motorcraft FL-820s and Motorcraft 5W-20 picked up from Walmart. However if you want to save some money in the long run, don't purchase a jug of the 5 quart and then a 1 quart bottle. The price for 1 quart of oil is just crazy compared to the 5 quart jug. Go a head and pick up a few of the 5 quart jugs, you will end up using it all over time anyway.
As for doing it your self:
1 oil filter......a few $
6 QT of oil....a few more $
Time spent laying under your truck while oil drains, checking out the underside of the truck in peace and quite, and the feeling of working on your own truck.....Priceless

As a side note, the first time I did my own oil change on the V-10. I looked at the size of the FL-820s filter and thought that the S must stand for "Short".
Cause it sure looked like a very small short oil filter for such a big engine.

Has anyone called the dealer for the oil. I was doing as tranny flush on my motor home and found mercon 5 at the auto parts for 5.10 a qt called the dealer they wanted 4.60 a qt. when I am buyin 24 thought I should buy at dealer. Got there and must have had the manager and he sold it to me for 4.10 a qt. I know wal mart is like 3.30 at qt for the MC 5w-20 so its cheap. And its cheaper to buy the qt.

I was using Motorcraft syn-blend 5w-20 and Motorcraft filter in my 2008 F250. I use this truck mostly for towing. Changed to Mobil1-full syn 5w-20 and I am using their filter. I will evaluate it over the next year. I think the most important thing is to change it. I have always change my oil at 5,000 miles-easy to remember and I have never had a major motor problem. My truck-7quarts.

Thank you for the advice, I picked up a FL-820S at wally world. I never noticed that they carried Ford / Chevy brand oil filters before. I looked over all the 5 qt jugs and looks like Pennzoil high mileage (copper color jug) is the best for me the clock is at 129K. bought 2 at $16 / 5qt

Do you have to replace the crush gasket under the plug, or is it ok to reuse?

I was not aware of the "silicone anti-drainback valve" issue so have picked filters of mid to upper price range. I have a 99 F350, 6.8 v10 and switched from 5w30 to 5w20 a few years back. I change oil and filter every 3,000 mi, have only gone past 4,000 twice since new. i use it for everything I do around town and pull a 10k 5er on weekends. As of today I have 335,255 mi on the clock. Never an engine problem.

For the 99-00 V10 5W-30 was recommended and that is what I have used from day one in my truck along with a FL-820S filter, I also changed to Mobil I at 15K miles. We are also in S Florida for the winter

I was not aware of the "silicone anti-drainback valve" issue so I have picked my oil filter in the mid to upper price range. I have 99 F350 DRW SC LB 6.8 V10. A few years back I changed from 5w30 to 5w20, do my own service at 3k. I have only gone past 4K 2 or 3 times since I purchased it new. I use the truck for everything I do around town because I like to drive it and I pull a 10K rer on the weekend. Have probably pull the 5er 60K or more. As of today, the truck has 335,255 mi on the clock. Never a problem with the engine.
