oil consumption

my 05 e450 v10 with 49.5k mi just recently started to use oil...before it might need a quart if that by 3k mi but that is when i would change the oil so i never had to add oil between oil changes...so somewhere after 45k mi it started to use oil because i added a quart before the 48k service and now at 49.5 i needed to add a quart again

a couple minor engine problems occurred before the 48k mi oil change service...first the tensioner pulley bearing seized and a vacuum hose became disconnected...when i added oil the first time i attributed that to the tensioner bearing and the engine working harder and the hose was fixed the same day...so now since its been fixed i wasnt expecting to have to add oil anymore...lastly, ive only used 5w20 semi synthetic motorcraft

My 2001 F-350 seems to use more than the usual amount of oil between changes. I have been told by Ford technical people (I work at a dealership) that 1 quart every 500 miles is still acceptable. MIne isn't that bad despite 156,000 on the clock. And you have to remember there are 10 cylinders to keep oiled, so that is maybe why the V-10 uses more oil than some of the V-8's. Just my thoughts, not the gospel...

just a shot in the dark but this started to happen about the same time the motorcraft oil came in the new bottles...i wonder if they deleted some additives or changed something in the oil

just doesnt seem right that all of a sudden i have to add a least a quart

My '99 V10 all of a sudden developed a oil usage problem after 70K of using less than a quart between changes. Someone here suggested checking the PCV and sure enough, it was bad. A quick replacement and my oil consumption problem went away.

Synth will actually evaporate some of it's volatile ingredients. The more heat, the quicker it evaporates. It's possible they changed the formulation and that made it worse.

Weird, but I use Castrol GTX 5w30 dino oil, and have NO oil consumption whatsoever in three different modulars.

However, ol'yeller is right, check the PCV system out.

x2 most likely the PCV make sure when you replace it to reinstall it with a bead of RTV sealer so it dosnt pop out. Mine uses synthetic faster than Dino when i used to use it about 1 to 2 quarts every 5500 miles. I use QS 4x4 torque power (or somthin like that)

Still checking my oil consumption do to PCV. With my factory PVC, I could put a flashlight behind it and see light, also I could blow on both ends and air would easily go throw. Center piece would rattle. I put in a NAPA so I'm still watching it.

I'm now at 1500 miles on the oil/PCV valve change. 6qts on my dipstick is half way. I am now at the low mark. So I have burned 1/2 quart in 1500 miles. That is not much change with the new PCV valve. There is oil in the hose running from the top of the PCV valve to the throttle body. Should there be?

The PCV valve should only extract the gasses from blow by in the crank case to just less than atmospheric pressure, to keep them out of the outside air. If its stuck open it can suck out oil vapors that can collect in the hose, and will cause the engine to slowly lose oil.
I didn't think the V-10 was known for using much oil, my 2000 doesn't use much, if any between changes (every 5K) I never have to add, and it has around 90K on it. I use Mobil 1 5W-20 or 30 in it.

I will jump on the band wagon here, go with the PCV valve, my 05 uses no oil between oil changes, and I use Mobil 1 5W-20 and change every 3K.

What oil are you using again?

MC 5W-20. I have used PP 5W-20 in the past too with the same usage result. Looking back at my notes, it seems this is the norm for my V-10. I may try a new Motorcraft PCV and see what happens.

Went and got a new Motorcraft EV-233 PCV valve. It looks just like my old Motorcraft on the bottom with the cutouts on the loose inside part. It also comes with a 90 degree elbow attached. According to the parts guy that's the only way they come. My hose just slipped over the top with out a 90. I left the 90 on for now.

Guys....check your pcv line, my 00 v-10 was using about a half to three quarters of a quart between changes , i pulled the entire hose assembly while doing a tune up this weekend, and the elbow had split on the end away from the valve. where it attaches next to intake. so hopefully its good now . will keep an eye on it. replaced all plugs as well as boots and had one bad cop that i swapped out. gonna do the underside this weekend, lube slip joint and brakes/trans fluid change..... but be sure to check the entire hose for that pcv valve, had to pull air intake off to get to it.

i changed the oil last week and got an oil sample and all looks ok...im going to wait till the summer/fall to do the 60k mi service and change the pcv and check the hoses...for now ill just keep adding about 2qts every 3k mi

its more annoying now that i have to check the oil level and add...how low can it go before u have to worry?
