I have a 2000 excursion, V-10, with 100K Miles on it. Always maintained, always light duty use, a lot of highway miles. Summer towing of a 3,000 lb boat.
Here's the rub. My excursion has used a bit of oil since day 1. The truck was switched to synthetic after break in and have changed oil and filter every 5K, Mobil 1, 5/30. But it is getting to point where she's burnin about a quart every 800 to 1,000 miles. I've done the PCV valve.
I've read a ton about oil on this site and others. I'm considering switching from synthetic to regular oil to see if that reduces the burn. What would you do?
You can always switch back if it makes no difference. I bought my Ex with 112,000 on it and use it almost exclusively for towing a 9000lbs TT. I use a quart about every 1,000-1500 miles, regular oil.
Switching back to conventional oil isn't going to change the amount of oil you burn. You would be able to save some $ on the extra oil you have been adding. Synthetic is supposed to give added protection but having to add a quart every 800 miles is pretty expensive. I ron AMSOIL synthetic but I don't burn more then a quart every 5000 miles.
U could also try diff. brands. Walmarts supertech syn. is about 19 buck a gal. I use it in the wifes 06 lexus and have good luck. Just look at api certs on the bottle and don't worry about the name.
