the number designates the magnetic heading ie; 25 R is on a heading of 250 deg when landing from the east to west, and during Santa Ana wind conditions LAX will use it the opposite direction which is 7L or 070 deg.

There is also 4 Helo approaches which are not shown on this page but on the Helo Chart for LAX and the landing pads are on the roof of the furthest west parking lot across from the front of the Tom Bradley building.
I remember when I was a kid, hearing my dad say he had two favorite college football teams. UCLA and whoever was playing USC at the time. As for the LAX runways, from an aerial view all four look to be pointing the same way. I was aware of what the 25 and 24 stood for, and upon closer inspection, he is right and I am wrong (ACK!)
