Have a super Saturday & let's hope that there's no more wind!
Santa's (entire) Village blew over yesterday, so now we've gotta scramble to assemble it all over again & replace broken wood & lights! Please keep the emergency personal & families that have been evacuated or lost their homes in the Caughlin Fire - Reno,NV in your thoughts & prayers.
I flew quite a bit when I was in the transitional center, didn't fly the 172 too much though, it was too slow. I preferred the Mooney Bravo. Of course, all this flying was done in MS Flight Sim 2002. I too wished I had learn to fly when I was younger.
I'll tell you you haven't lived until you have flown MOE ( Map Of the Earth) 25 agl along the shoreline in an R44 at 130 knots dodging kites and sea gulls, skimming the wave tops all of the way to San Diego... Especially at Long Rifle err uhh Camp Pendleton! that was my every morning flight for 5 years... we called it the "company mail run". It was true seat of the pants flying! I usually had a student pilot along for the ride, but only the ones with strong stomachs... from KLGB to KSEE in 42 minutes with a Transition through KNKX ( Mira Mar ) Air space, always exciting sharing the pattern with F18's! Then to KCNO and back to KLGB Man I miss that stuff!
What sort of a route does a private craft take for that trip Marv?
Fly parallel and south of I-10. That means getting south of LAX, so it's basically straight west after lift-off out over the water, then a right turn while continuing to make altitiude to cross LAX at 5000 ft.
Down to Seal Beach, then out over the mountains between San Gregonio and Idlewild to avoid the turbulence and inbound traffic in Banning Pass.
Pretty-much direct PHX until about Goodyear, where you turn slightly to the south to pass on the south side of South Mountain and Gilbert, then almost direct Falcon. The return is about the same except for altitude, and it's more direct Santa Monica after Idlewild, passing under the inbound LAX traffic while they are still at altitude.

I can see the SLI VOR from my house SO you were staying south of the Victor 8?

Mooney Bravo's are fast, but sluggish yoke Authority... King Air is a little bigger, but much more responsive... SR22, Citabria, and DIamond DA twin also really fun to fly... but the fixed wing fun toy, is the Lancair Legacy with an optional IO540 Lycoming it will cruise just under 300 knots... awesome fun, and damned agile... they are becoming popular Reno Air racers... Vans RV8 if you want scary agile.... or any of the Pitt's specials.

Unfortunately I don't have those options in MS FS 2002, except for the King Air 350. What do you think of the Jetranger 206B? I would love to be a chopper pilot, and fly that.

I flew a 206L which is a the 206B, only a bit longer in length, it was fun to fly, but the Tail rotor Authority is a bit sluggish! Robinson R22, and R44 are a blast to fly, as is the EC 120 EC130, and UH1 EC's (Eurocopters) allow for Negative G pushovers, which you cannot do in the Robinson's for fear of chopping the Tail Boom off. If you can learn to fly an R22 you can fly anything... Flying an R22 is like trying to sort out a wildcat fight! In other words you are very active on the controls 100% of the time, if you look on youtube you can find videos of guys opening a coke bottel with a bottleo pener taped to an R22 skid, it is a great example of how agile they are... Oh and a Puma... what a wild aircraft that is
There is a website, I will have to ask my son what it is, that will let you download other Aircraft and fly them on Flight Sim. I have downloaded an SR71, a UH1,Cobra, Long Bow, Comanche an F14 tomcat, P51, you get the idea... it gives you a bit of an idea what they are like.

Did LAX gain something I don't know about? 24L, 24R, 25L, & 25R. There's another now?
You really have to feel sorry for those poor, "challenged" helicopter pilots that have to use their aircraft to do what the rest of us do with a hand-opener.
Yuk, yuk, yuk.......
It just occurred to me that his Skylane is a 182, not a 172. Duh......

So sorry LAX used to have a privateer runway along the north side that was removed many years ago, or more correctly converted into a taxiway.
Helicopter pilot: an outstanding individual with exceptional piloting skills known as a two percenter, since they are among the top two percent of all pilots as far as skill set's, and training..... Extremely brash and intelligent individuals....
How can you tell that there is a helo pilot at your party?
Don't worry he will tell you!
Helicopter: a collection of 40,000 individual parts flying more or less loosely in formation... it is said that a helicopter does not fly through the air with the greatest of ease, but instead beats the air into submission... although others will tell you that Helicopters do not fly, but instead the earth finds them so ugly, that the earth's gravitational field repulses them into the air.
Runways are for beauty Queens, everything else is for helicopters!
