Spent the day above the cloud cover today. Flew over to Mesa to bring back a Springer that we adopted out last week. It didn't work out for Rookie, and we always take them back into our foster program. The Arizona contingent had just taken in four additional this week, so they couldn't just assimilate him into the Phoenix area.
Left Santa Monica Airport about 1030, and popped out on top shortly thereafter. On top all the way there and back. Takes about two and a half hours one way in a Cessna 182. The pilot has it outfitted VERY nicely with avionics, so I spent most of the time getting to know the Garmin GNS-530W GPS unit in it. Not only is it a great GPS, but is also a NAV/COM as well. Additionally, it displays his TCAS information, and provides terrain alerts. Heckuva' unit, and really puts ten pounds in a five-pound box.
Rookie just went to sleep and enjoyed the ride back.
Saved me a fifteen-hour round trip in the F-350.

Reason: Changed aircraft type from C-172
I miss the old days of putting around in a Cessna 172. Sounds like the plane you were in had a glass cockpit. Those are very cool. One of these days I will get my license (really its a certificate, not a license.)
