I've been curious about that too. We've got a perfect south facing roof exposure.
When we bought our new fridge, there was an SCE rebate. I think it was $50. They sent a truck out to pick it up for free, and it gets recycled. It was good for us, since we didn't want to keep it and would have had to get it picked up anyway. The info was on the SCE web pages.
