I did all kinds of reading as I was doubled up on trailers.
In my state the max is 65' total which I was right at or just over with the train.
Yep. The rig in this picture is right at 63'. In the west and south 65' is the most common limit. Luckily they exclude bumpers and hitches because I'm going to be pulling this with the Ex as soon as my Automated Safety Hitch is built.
If you don't mind me asking, what is that Automated Safety Hitch going to cost? I had briefly looked at the old but very similar Hitch Buddy way back but instead opted to go with a standard bumper pull TH then TT for behind our EX.

It's going to be about $12k. It's a pretty penny but then I retain the ability to double tow (where legal) and don't have to buy a new trailer. We're to the point where a pickup isn't enough space for everyone that wants to go and taking two cars just kills a lot of the fun as we don't get the time together in the car.
I have pulled a trailer of some kind most of my life, whether it was a equipment trailer (daily, used to be a contractor), my boats, car trailers, my fifth wheel with my rockcrawlers behind it etc. My Dad used to own a horse trailer sales business and used dollies similar to the ASH when the double pulled on deliveries.
I have a big fifth wheel (35 footer) still sitting in my driveway with a for sale sign on her because i am in the same boat you are
I do not want to rain on anyone's parade, but what is your plan when that dolly blows a tire? I have researched and watch the videos, and saw all the safety BS propaganda, but know one has said a damn thing about that.
One of my dad's dolly tires blew out on a delivery and he wrecked the trailer combo. He had his next dolly setup with dual axles. He is a former law enforcement and has seen these thing fail on more than one crash site. I just got off the phone with him this morning cause a few weeks ago he mentioned keeping my fiver and using a dolly. I had told him i was not interested. When i asked him about the tires he sighed....
My impression is that blowing a tire on the dolly would be no worse than blowing a tire on the pickup pulling a fiver (which I have done). It wasn't something I would sign up for but if you are paying attention and don't panic you get through it just fine. I can see how it would be a mess if the dolly were at the back of another trailer and had freedom to pivot but in this case it is rigidly attached to the Ex. I would think he Ex would do just fine holding it all straight until I could get it stopped. Hopefully I never have to find out.
you might be right, with the rigid connection to the excursion frame you are going to get a serious weight transfer as one side of the frame is dragged downward
ASH called me. The claim to have done the r&d and do not feel it is an issue..
They also mentioned they felt the dualies made it too hard to turn the vehicle.
We brought the new one home today, a 2017 Surveyor 33RETS. It is heavier than the Puma but the Ex had no trouble with it. The wife organized the inside and I put on the Pro-Pride, and other goodies. Ft Wilderness bound in 2 weeks!
That new trailer is beautiful. Part of me wishes I could justify something of that size.
Last week I bought a new wash mitt on a stick to wash the trailer. I'll tell ya ..... you don't realize how much real estate a TT is until you wax one.

We have about half as much time till retirement and starting our full time RV life goal. Our eyes are set firmly on that prize!
We bought a new bunk trailer yesterday to replace the scissor trailer our pontoon was on.
I set it all up and put the toon on it yesterday right away. Man it is high up there! But it is much more stable. The poor Odyssey is going to reject its transmission with this one yet.
