Talk to Larry Ankrum Tell him Denny ( Red '52 Ford Truck ) sent you . If he can not repair it it can not be repaired . He has been in the business of auto electric forever . He is very talented with this type of thing .
Excellent
It sounds like you are finding some sources fairly close to home. I sure hope one of them can get it fixed up for you. It would sure save you a lot of shipping fees.
Good luck
Bobby
No luck so far with my local shops. All 5 I brought it to said they couldn't help me. I spoke to Chuck of Chuck's Trucks who said he could modify a Powermaster to work in the truck. I really would like to just get mine restored and drop it back in place. I will do some more checking and decide.
Dang, that's a bummer. I was sure hoping one of those guys would be able to fix you up.
Who would have thought it would be so danged hard to get a working generator
I hear ya Bobby!! What a pain this is turning into.
Denny no luck with Larry. He refuses to work on it because it won't be kept in the original 6 volt configuration. Thanks anyway!
I guess I have 2 choices to make.
Send it to the guy in Oregon who can rebuild it in 12 volts ($595) or convert it to an alternator ($995) both with a 6 week turn out time. 2 year warranty. This option obviously let me keep everything original looking and will mount in its original position.
Send it to Chuck who will provide a new powergenerator ($450) and will have to custom make brackets (few hours labor) and will use my original double pulley from the old generator so I can still run my original friction siren. Chuck said there is a minor adjustment on the new generator (an inch or so) so hopefully everything will line up in the correct location.
One year warranty. Using Chuck will decrease my wait time and I know his fabrication will be spot on as he already did this for his F7 already.
I really would like to just drop it back in place but on the other hand it would be nice to have a brand new unit.
New development: I called a friend who owns a bunch of WWII vehicles who have 6 volt systems to see if he knows of anyone who could work on the generator. He thinks he can make a relay between the regulator and generator that will fix the problem. He is a knowledgeable mechanic who works on his vehicles. He said to bring the truck over on Sunday to see what him and his mechanic buddies can do. I will give it a shot.
Cool
If nothing else, it will be a fun day of playing trucks with friends. Sounds like he might have some great projects laying about.
Bobby, you have no idea how many toys this guy has! He has 2 huge buildings full of vehicles. Its literary military museum. 14 WWII jeeps, Korean War tank, 2 WWII DUKWs, 6x6's, all kinds of military vehicles. I'll try and post some pics tomorrow.
I'm a little skeptical this will work but will give it a shot. I don't want any trouble created with my wiring system. We'll see how it goes.
Exciting news!! The truck is in the magazine! I am thrilled!
Some minor mistakes in the written story but it came out nice.
I was told you can buy copies at Barnes & Nobles or contact the company. Its the March/April edition of Vintage Fire Truck & Equipment issue #3. Here is the first 2 pages of 6.
That's great Keith. That means my copy will be here soon. can't wait to read it. I now know some one famous, even if it is only for 15 minutes. congrats.
Thanks guys! I've had a few people say I should frame it. I just might do it.
Forgot to update my generator issue. I brought the truck to my friends house and he tried a 5 ohm 50 watt resistor between the generator and the regulator. It was temporarly set up and seemed to work good. I will set it up this weekend permanently and will see how it goes. This is a quick fix for now.
