1023 diesel tuning
I had the opportunity to speak with him for just a few moments. He was in the middle of a live tuning session, so not much was discussed. I did tell him though that we appreciate his participation on the FTE, but we also understand that he has a business to run and cannot be here to answer any and all questions that we come up with.
I also told him that our FTE community was more about having our trucks run efficiently, clean power and tow heavy loads safely rather than blowing black smoke and doing burn outs.
Dusty was a respectful person to speak with and I look forward to doing business with him in the future.
I really like the shifting lol
Tune number 13 is medium tow from 1023 EDIT ###### the purple MPH should be accelerator. It is now labeled "Go pedal" sorry for the mix up but I'm not redoing the images.
Tune 14 is light tow/economy from 1023
This is another tuners tow tune
Told me it would be to my house by the weekend. I had a tracking number sent to my e-mail within 10 minutes.
No big deal, I'm out of town for another week anyways. I have patience for these sorts of things. Told him I really appreciated the direct phone call more than anything.
I love seeing young businesses start off on the right foot.
I also got a chance to hook up the RV and pull it about 25 miles. It was mostly flat but I was more interested in how the transmission would shift between 50 and 60 MPH. The problem with the GH tunes was that I couldn't stay in OD below about 62. It would constantly hunt gears. Using the cruise control seemed to make it worse because it would get into a cycle of needing a quick burst of throttle to make up a little bit of speed, which would cause a downshift to 3rd. Then it would hit the target speed, back off, upshift, and the speed would drop below the the target just enough to trigger another downshift. It basically impossible to use OD or CC below 62 MPH.
I said that the issue had to be tuning. The truck had more than enough power to maintain the speed, it simply wasn't tuned right. With the 1023 tunes, the issue seems to have been completely solved. I had no problem doing 53 or 55 in OD, with or without the cruise. It just did exactly what it was supposed to do - what I always knew it could do.
The engine seems to run just as well regardless of which tuner I use. But the 1023 tunes just flat out work better with the 4R100.
I'll post a final report when I load this last set of tunes and see how the shift points are adjusted, but I'm much happier with both the quality of the tunes and the responsiveness of Dusty.
So far... I highly recommend.
One thing I have not yet done is check for a "stinky spike".
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I emailed my truck configuration and intended use to Corey and Jay; asking what they would recommend and why when they have time? Eliminating as much guessing now will save everyone time.
You can get in touch with Dusty here via PM and I believe he has a phone number listed on his Facebook page. Keep in mind he is in Alaska when calling though.
It seems that anyone that has had a minor issue with 1023 Tuning, it was related to the 4R100 shifting. Even then the issues are not really that, just customer preference changes is maybe what I should have said. This is only based on what I have read or heard about through PM's and emails.
With that said, anyone with a ZF6 is probably going to be very happy with what 1023 Tuning can do for them. Dusty did mention earlier though (or maybe it was second hand info) that the "heavy tow" tune was not really for a ZF6 owner. He recommended using the "medium tow" tune even when towing heavy with the ZF6, and just keep an eye on the EGT's to see how your truck likes it.
I plan to give 1023 Tuning a shot if/when I change out a major part of my truck. Gear Head has been good to me thus far, but their customer service seems to be falling off a bit as of late.
Being that the manuals don't have shift points and pressures to deal with, the light/medium/heavy tow tunes don't do too much for the ZF6 guys. I think I ended up with the medium tow tune and as was already said, I was told to drive as I wanted but keep an eye on EGTs.
My truck is new to me and I've barely driven it before tearing it down to fix some things. I won't be able to give an accurate accessment of the changes with the tunes because I'm doing a full reseal, injector rebuild and new HPOP as part of my repair work.
I bought a couple of 1023 tunes when they were on sale for Black Friday. I order the Street Shredder and the Cummins Killer tunes. I already have modified stock, hi-idle, drive thru, 80dd, and 140hp tunes from PHP, so I saw no need to to duplicate the 1st three.
It took him a while to get the tunes to me ( about a week I think), so he sent a few extra tow tunes, which I have not used. I finally installed the tunes the other day, along with some updates to my PHP tunes, that Bill had sent back in Sept.
I was unable to make any meaningful use of the 1023 tunes. On both the SS and CK tunes, I have zero throttle authority below about 17-20%. Doesn't matter if the truck is cold, or fully warmed up. Less the approx 17-20% throttle, I get no response at all. Switching back to ANY of my PHP tunes immediately resolves that. So, its not my truck.
Further, when I switch to the 1023 tunes, several PIDS freeze, on TorquePro ( at least ICP and boost- didn't have time to stare at the screen while driving). They "stuck" PIDS will occasionally make an intermittent change, but then they freeze again. Again, as soon as I switch back to ANY of my PHP tunes, the problem instantly goes away.
I gave Dusty the HEX code used for my PHP tunes, when I submitted my order, as I wanted them to match, for on the fly tune switching. The tunes I got from him have a sightly different HEX on the file name.
I sent him an email early yesterday, with these concerns, and to ask if the HEX code was actually different, or just the filename. So far, I have no gotten any response.
Obviously, the tunes are useless to me in the current state. I have a long trip tomorrow, and it would have been a great time to test and compare the PHP and 1023 tunes. I'll have to wait and see if/when I hear back from him.
Also, I am a bit annoyed about the overboost code issue. I CLEARLY stated in my original order/truck details, that I wanted the overboost code/CEL completely turned off. I already know I am exceeding factory boost levels. I don't want to see the CEL turn on all the time. If I get accustomed to the truck "crying wolf", then I may ignore the CEL when it turns on for something important. I have my boost fooler disabled, as I wish to be able to read full boost on TorquPro. Basically, its MY truck, and I want what I want. I made the same request to PHP, and they accommodated it in my revised tunes, so it CAN be done.
So, kind of disappointed so far, but we'll see how it goes when I get a response and/or updated tunes.
