I had a 71 F-100 Sport Custom that I bought new with a 390 coupled up to a C-6. A 258,000 miles i needed va valve job because only one cylinder was reading low so rather than just the valve job I did a complete overhaul. Everything as far as rings and bearings did not look bad, timing chain was getting there but overall, not bad at all. I continued to drive it until 1996 and sold it with 418,000 on it. It is still in the neighborhood and see it once in a while, still truckin!!!

hey otto, speaking of the caddy ht4100, we had an 84 caddy with that motor, at about 100,000k it burnt oil so bad and the compression was so low, that we used gear oil for motor oil, it actually made it run like new until it all burnt down again.
the day we got rid of the car in 1995, we traded it for an 88 gmc jimmy, we parked the caddy at the dealership, and the dealer never did get the car started ever again.(streak of good luck, i dunno) now we got the fords.(always were ford people, by the way.)

I am impressed! Several hundred thousand miles on the same power plant? Wow! We have had several pickups go up to and over 400,000 miles. These were work trucks that hauled building materials on a day to day basis. The only thing is that they all have had transmission and engine work. Ford and Chevy. We keep the service work up to date but they do get worked hard.

In response to the last post. Well, to be honest I have decided to stick with the the 390 and just rebuild it mainly because I do not want to cut into the firewall to fit the 454 into my engine compartment. Not much room under the hood of the old 48 - 52 pickups. But, I do have to say one thing. I have owned Chevy and Ford. I like them both.. Well, lets be totally honest here. I hate Chevy trucks but love Chevy cars ( classics that is. Used to have a 66 Chevelle that did 15.5s in the 1/4 mile. Wish I never sold it ) When it comes to trucks Ford has always been the way to go in my book. But, I do have to say that I have had more luck with the Chevys I have owned than the Fords I have owned. My Chevelle I got about 165k out of it before I sold it and it never burned oil. I'm just talking from my experience. I am here at this site because I love Ford Trucks. Not to put down the other guys. Like I said I love them both when it comes to motors. But, have had better luck with chevys.

1982 Luv. 258,000 all original and ugly.
Wife's Ford is broke down AGAIN! so she is using it to get to work. That thing will go till the frame rusts down some place I can't get a welder into. Sectioned the back 4 1/2 feet with the same parts of a 1949Chev. frame. Worked good

My company work truck is a 91 GMC 3500HD, 350, 5 speed, 9 foot utility box and last time I checked it weighed 9000+ pounds. The truck also regularly pulls skid steers on trailers and has been used to plow snow for the last 10 years. The truck has had many clutches/tranny repairs but the engine has never been touched and has 400,000+ miles on it. It's hard to tell exactly how many miles it has since the odometer didn't work for over 3 years ( GM's wonderful computer controlled everything). The truck don't have enough power to get out of it's own way and is a pain in the butt to drive but at least I don't have to pay for gas to get to and from work. At least I can drive my FORD on weekends.

In January of 1971 I bought a new F-100 with a 390, 2bbl, C-6, Camper special, Sport Custom. It cost less new then than a well used one does now. I overhauled the engine at 256,000 miles, this was the first time the heads had ever been off. The only reason I took it apart is because the compression was low on one cylinder so, what the heck, why not overhaul the whole thing! I found that it really was in good shape yet. Well, I figured, why not, I had it bored 60 over, had a set of 360 heads redone (smaller combustion chamber) and wow what a difference. It seemed to be easier on gas and had a bunch more power. I could 0-60 this thing in 6.3 seconds. It would eat any Chebbie for breakfast in a heartbeat. Well, I sold it two years ago and still see it on the road once in a while. When I sold it it had 419,000 miles and still running as strong as ever. That is the result of changing oil at 2500-3000 miles which I did religously.
It probably has at least a halv of a million miles on it by now!! I never heard of any other Chebbie or Doogie do this.

I beg the differ on this one. Maybe not a chevy but a GM product. Have a caddy that has over 450K miles on it and still runs great. Have just replaced the tranny. But the motor has always run good and doesn't burn a drop of oil yet. On the Ford perspective I had a Ford Pinto that I got 350K miles on it before it blew.. I was always told that a Pinto will run until the doors fall off.. In my case the person was correct.

I have a 1973 Volkswagen BUG! Oh, yeah!
However, it now has approx. 390,000 miles on it.. Never had the engine apart, never had ANY probs with it, Still has all original parts in it, except for the clutch... but thats sposed to be replaced, right? Carb is getting a lil hard to tune up, but hey... what can you expect from something nearly 30 yrs old?

HI all
My Father- in-law has a 1988 chevy that is just a little over 730,000 miles on the truck. the engine is original and has never had the heads off. It has been through 2, 5 speed transmisions and a couple of sets of rear springs but that ok considering this truck pulls a 6000 lb. tub grinder almost every day of the week. He has kept all receipts and records of work done on the truck since the day the truck was new so I know what I say is true and factual.
