Bill, a 5831 is a Spicer auxillary transmission, also referred to as a "Brownie Box". It is a 3 speed. Auxillary trannies were used in medium and heavy duty trucks. Now I have a 4 speed, with a 3 speed auxillary - for a total of 12 speeds. The high gear is 0.85 OD.
I have heard of those. That would be even better than a zf5....
Does it bolt right up to the T19?
Can I use it on a 4x4?
Is it synchronized?
I know the feeling. I found my old 1963 Chevy C-10 being parted out one day on Craigslist. It is now a bunch of cans, kitchen stoves, and some gardening sheds. A moment of silence, please.
I forgot to say that the 79 has a full floating rear axle and I am going to replace the gears to a more highway friendly set. It also has a tow package with trailer brakes. I have pulled a 16 foot dual axle trailer without issues.
I really do like my 83, but no matter what is done or how great the condition is, it is still not a high dollar value for resale. I really want to keep all three, but I do not have the space for storage.
I have a 93 2wd F-350 with a zf 5 speed that I can always sub into my 79. I have a 78 with a 4 speed that I can get the clutch pedal assembly from if I do this. Again it is not a have to sell, it is just making a good choice.

That must have hurt to see.
I have had to sell one and part out another that I wrecked, and I know what it feels like to have that happen to a car/truck you love

Well, I would go with the 79 then.
It a D60 under the back?
Shame you don't have the room.
Bill, it is divorce mounted. I wanted to mount it between my trans and transfer case, but both have low miles and I could not justify replacing them with a 2wd trans and divorce mounted TC. I mounted it behind the transfer case, so low gear and overdrive can only be used in 2wd. I can still use 4wd in direct. It is non synchroed, and makes for one heck of a driving experience. I can leave it in direct and just drive it normally, but where would be the fun in that? I had to make my own mounting brackets and do some fab work, but it was worth it. You have two sticks in the cab, which raises plenty of eye brows. My first gear final ratio is 136:1, 1st gear x low range in transfer case (twin sticked) x low gear in the 5831 x 4.56 final ratio. There is a whole thread about the Brownies in the transmission section.
If I could figure out a way to add it, I probably would...but that would just be silly. Not like all the other unnecessary things on the truck! That is why I needed another truck for a DD - I got a little out of control!
