It depends on the hiking. When I've gone elkhunting with my buddy (mule only - I don't have a rifle... yet) I always wear my Sorel Conquests. For hiking/daytrip kinda stuff I like Merrell's for the way they fit & flex - I tend to rockhop whenever possible and they offer good support while still being flexible. Great soles too and many styles come in a Gore-Tex or waterproof version. For backpacking and/or carrying a load, I have some REI hikers that are heavier than the Merrell's with a solid bottom & stiffening plate.
