No topic thread,,, Part 2
Going to pick up my truck today. Aparently it was a connector on the tranny that wasn't clicked fully together. If I hit a bump or something the right way it would jiggle it and throw the tranny into a safe mode or something. They also replaced the clutch packs in the rear end. Picked up a 2" leveling kit with rear blocks this weekend, so I hope to get that installed pretty quick, as well as taking the truck to a guy for a full detail inside and out. He charges 189$...I think he'll be raising his prices once he sees the state my truck is...
Was in Vanscoy this past weekend helping my brother inlaw with his new house. This 5.0 is a very interesting motor. I noticed that the rear end is a 3.55 instead of a 3.73 like my truck, that might have something to do with the sluggish feeling compared to mine. Also the peak power/torque of the 5.0 is above 4500rpm where the Ecoboost makes peak power at 2500rpm. Passing power is good on the 5.0 but you have to kick it down to 4th to make it move and keep those revs up. The speed limiter is set about 5km/h lower than my truck. When WOT from a stop it pulls good in first and 2nd but 2nd-3rd it completely falls flat on its face as the rpms drop to about 2800 and take a while to recover. The 5.0 got 20mpg (hand calculated, cruise set at 110km/h, light passing) driving up to Vanscoy, a few trips from Vanscoy to the city and back, then into the city again and fueled up before heading back home. Will fill up this morning and check the drive home mileage. the truck computer shows about 20mpg again, but this time it was strickly hwy driving, cruise set at 125km/h, extreme passing.
All in all, I've changed my mind from not liking this 5.0 at all to thinking that with 3.73's, exhaust and a tune, it would be a fun truck. Still doesn't have the turbo hit tho...
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I've got a massive issue on my hands and need some serious advice.
Bottom line... my truck won't "run". It will start, but won't stay running.
Here is what I have diagnosed:
1) All electrical is plugged in and where it needs to be = not an issue
2) Fuel pump (mechanical) is pumping fuel to the carburetor (carb bowl is FULL of gas) = not an issue
3) Carb float and needle both work fine, smooth and operational = not an issue
4) Fuel is being burned upon starting the engine as it WILL FIRE but just will not stay running no matter what I do = possible fuel issue?
5) The truck has fuel in the fuel tank (approximately 20 litres of fuel... should be lots)
6) If I turn the truck over with my pedal to the floor, the engine will
a) turn over
b) fire
c) rev very high
d) die after the fuel is burned, no matter if I keep pumping the pedal
7) All of the carb parts are mobile, working and brand new as of August last summer. They all work (from what I know) because I had the truck idling under its own power at the start of this summer. Started up just fine and did not need someone sitting inside it.
A few things to note:
1) The solenoid will continue spinning for roughly 3 seconds after the truck has stopped running (after firing 1 time because that's all I can get it to do) when I try to get the truck to run.
2) The truck seems to SUCK a MASSIVE amount of air (more than normal) when I hit the pedal and try to keep it running (once it fires).
WHAT COULD BE WRONG?
Give me possible solutions and scenarios I can go run/check with my truck please!
She needs to move under her own power within the next 2 days!

Did you block any venting nodules on the tank when you put the rust protectant on it?
Fuel lines partially plugged where enough fuel seeps through to show you that its getting fuel, but not enough to keep the truck running.
Check all your vaccum lines for correct routing and make sure they're not split anywhere.
If you don't have your air cleaner on it will sound weird, like its sucking gobs of air, but that also could be vaccum sounds...
Just a couple thoughts from my minimal experience with these carb'd trucks...
Insure it, drop a match in the gas tank, collect money. Get a job so that you're working for money in the time you would have normally been wrenching on this frustrating beast, go buy a new truck and make payments. It will give you personal satisfaction to be driving something reliable, and perhaps some luck with some quality ladies as they would prefer to ride around in a shiny new truck over a smelly old beater...
