Will we at least compare torque?! haha Suspension, braking??!!
a 2003 3/4 ton compared to a 2011 1/2 ton? I'm willing to bet the differences of the power and legal capacities of each are pretty close... I might be a little shy on torque (on paper), but with the 6spd auto (when it works) and the modern technology of tow/haul mode (when it works) makes for a very impressive hauler...
I know a new half ton would beat my old 3/4 ton in a drag race. Bet the new half ton rides a hell of a lot nicer as well!
Hauling heavy loads, I dont think it would be much of a contest. Diesels are meant for stuff like that. The heavy suspension (plus I have my truck beefed up even more then stock) makes hauling and towing effortless!
The legal capacities (on paper) are probably pretty close, but I think the real world would show the differences pretty fast.
Ive towed enough heavy heavy loads with a big truck before to have a pretty good grasp on what works well and what doesnt. Diesels work well!
Now I would love to try a brand new diesel truck out for towing! Or better yet a brand new modded diesel, that would be the bomb!
I will admit though, my truck is a little weaker now then it was when I first bought it (when pulling heavy), but for 322,000 on the odo, she still does pretty good!
On Edit: Im not trying to imply a new half ton cant tow well either! Sorta getting at the big differences would be 3/4 ton vs half ton, and diesel vs gas.
it would be a fun test Prep... I know the diesel's are intended for towing on a regular basis, so not doubting or argueing that it would be the better truck for the job, just implying that these new 1/2 tons are very capable, and perhaps even more capable than the 3/4-1 ton trucks of yesterday. What matters most is I like my truck, it does everything I need it to (except for the moment).
What is interesting is the difference between the 5.0L loaner truck I have, and my Ecoboost. There is only 5hp but 40ftlbs difference between the two with the 5.0 being lesser. The 5.0 will howl from a stop, but once 40km/h comes around its pretty much done with the excitement. The exhaust note, even in stock form, is enough to give any straight male wood. The Ecoboost has the turbo lag against it, where I would be two truck lengths into a start before the tires start to howl...once those turbos spool up tho, its all excitement until the governer kicks in around 160...
Interesting to drive the two trucks...with the "off the line" performance of the 5.0 and the exhaust note, it gets a nod for me as a motor I'd buy... Not about to give up my turbo power any time soon tho...
