My 1996 F150 extend cab 4x4 just gave a huge clunk and grind. Now the amps are low and steering is hard. I guess I will be doing this conversion over the next few days. Checked some prices and don't see any for $50 let alone $40.

I did this to mine almost a year ago and it works great, along with the hydro-boost. Its a must, i cant imagine the stock pump would keep up but the saginaw strong and doesnt whine one bit.

It was actually my idler pulley which was bad. The tensioner pulley was missing also. I still plan on changing the PS unit out. I did notice that the pressure hose end into the steering does not fit. It is too small. I had purchased a 91582 hose from advance auto.

Factory pump will keep up with the hydro, mine does just fine and it's still perfectly quiet - keep in mind that I have it modified to move more fluid (helps the steering) and at the same time run higher line pressure (helps the hydroboost) so if anything she's working harder than what most other folks'.

With this pump, what pressure hose did you run between the pump and the hydroboost? Also how did you run the return line from the hydro, since the Cardone pump only has one return port? I'm thinking of a hose and external fluid tank from a hydroboosted Chevy, as some of them have a double-flare on the pump end and will bolt up directly to the Ford F-Superduty hydroboost one the other end...

Cardone 20-6244 from Advance Auto vs. 4.9L

June2010. Adv Auto lists this pump still, so I ordered it: 49.99 plus 30.00 core Did not come with the U-shaped adapter to fit onto the 3-bolt Ford bracket. My pulley had a different bore also. Called the wrecking yard and for $35 got a Saginaw pump with pulley and the brackets to fit my '94 F150 4.9L (off E-250 Van '88). Removed pulley from junkyard pump--it fit the new Cardone Saginaw. No adapter on the junkyard pump either, so swapped whole bracket which had the Saginaw pattern (though only 3 holes are used). Had to replace my return hose with a longer one due to S-shaped fitting on pump. Pressure hose fit the Cardone pump. Flushed, then purged the system. Unbelievable difference in pumps. I have owned the truck since 2006. I hated the pump noise, so replace it with an Autozone rebuild and it was noisier still. A year later I was ordering from Summit and saw a new AGR Pump listed there. I was somewhat quieter, but over time quickly grew noisier and ended up leaking. Discovered this thread and now I feel like I got a new truck. So nice to actually hear the engine instead of the #$^%@& pump. Shame on Ford. . Also, It did not come with the weird (double) stud/fitting on the back of the reservoir. The one off the junkyard E250 pump was metric or a different thread and didn't fit. I had saved a GM/Saginaw pump from a '67 327 Chev and the fitting from it went in just fine. Thought I would add an updated note for anyone considering the swap to the Cardone/Saginaw 20-6244 pump.

Reviving an old thread here.. I'm doing this replacement myself on my 92 f150 4.9L and stumbled across a few things.

It seems the pump has been replaced by a newer model? Nobody listed 20-6244 anymore when I called around and this site

CARDONE® REMAN Saginaw Power Steering Pump Installation in a Bronco - Ford Bronco Zone Early Bronco Classic FullSize Broncos

says that cardone replaced 20-6244 with 20-7272. I picked up 20-7272 and it looks like this

I was able to get the pulley off but found that the pressure line in my truck is too large to fit the new pump. Does anyone know if the pressure line that some folks used from a '79 F250 will fit this pump? Also.. I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to this stuff and I am not entirely sure how to remove the other end of the pressure line.. It looks like it goes into a really tough to reach spot with little room, although I didn't get a good look as it was raining and I was in a hurry to get it all back together. Thanks!

The
Need for the 79 pressure line is because of the smaller fitting.

Just did a little more work. I didn't realize the larger and smaller nut separate at the end of the pressure line and the larger portion stays in the pump. My stock line fits on the new pump. The bad news is come to find out this pump is exactly the same as the old one, just painted black.... It is just as noisy, if not louder than my old pump so I essentially spent the evening in the rain to make the pump louder. I'll give it a day or two though and see if maybe this one just needs to get a little air out of its system to quiet down..

Yea that doesn't even look close to a Saginaw pump. Looks just like the stockers. I did the saginaw swap but that was before they quit making the 6244s.

Here is my Saginaw.

harabec, you need to look at evan's, i would go and pull a bracket and a pump/pulley from one with a 4.9 , all the e vans used the saginaw style pump. thats what i sourced my parts for mine, with a 351

I stopped by a pick n pull after work today. I didn't have much time to actually tear into any of the vans there but I looked through and only found one econoline with the 4.9 I6. From what I could see though the saginaw pump inside was mounted in a totally different fashion than the stocker mounts in my truck. Mine mounts at 3 different points in a triangle shape with 2 at the top and one at the bottom. The one in the econoline van had a bracket on it that had two mount points, both completely to one side. Maybe that was just an extra bracket to hold it to the motor, but that seemed to be the main way it was holding the pump. hmm... Anyone else do the swap to a 4.9L have any input?

I just got off the phone with a shop that listed having a Saginaw pump off a 95 econoline with the same motor as me. They too said that the bracket it was attached to was a sheet metal piece to one side with two bolts similar to the one I found in the van at the pick and pull. Shouldn't these have the black horseshoe shaped bracket to fit the 3-bolt pattern in my truck? I'm very confused..
