...Is there a different looking saginaw pump other than pear shaped? Thanks for any info.
If you look at the pic I posted, note the circular pump area & how it "sits" in the "can" reservoir. Most look just like that. There are variations in the shape of the reservoir with some being remotely mounted and the "can" part being just big enough to enclose the pump. Take a look at a Summit catalog for some ideas.
I was wondering if someone could give me the part numbers I would need to perform the conversion. The number listed in the above feed does not exist any longer. So I guess I would need the power steering pump number and the pressure hose number. I have a 1996 F-150 5.0 L
This weekend I decided to take a look at my 20-6244.
It had been a while since I changed fluid, so I set out to do that.
After disconnecting the return line, I discovered that I totally forgot that I had installed an "inside of the rubber hose" type of insert filter and, after removing it from the hose, the filter was nearly 1/3 plugged.
I cleaned the filter insert with brake clean and reassembled with new MercV fluid.
I regained some power in the pump by taking these steps.
So now I should be able to get a few more years out of this pump.
I did discover something though.
I Googled for local steering pump rebuilders to no avail.
I was going to check w/ RedHead (a local to me company) to see if they had any recommendations.
Two names prominently appeared. Lares and Cardone - neither local- but they have Rebuild and Return programs in which your local parts house will send your pump to them for a rebuild.
I'm surprised NAPA didn't know this when I contacted them.
I sent Cardone an email asking if they can rebuild a 20-6244 in spite of the fact that it is discontinued.
This is their response:
Thank you for e-mailing us. The only thing I can suggest is that there would be a good chance that we can remanufacture the unit you have. If you do decide to do this you would have to deal with a store that participates in our Rebuild & Return program.
I never inquired about cost, but it sounds as if they can rebuild the pump. You just need to deal with one of their participating retailers. It looks like many of the parts stores do participate, so check with your local store and the program is Rebuild & Return Service (R&R service).
Okay, I have read through this thread a couple of times and understand that the Cardone/Napa conversion pumps are no longer available. So, if I understand correctly, to put the Saginaw pump on my "97 F-250HD with a 351W engine all I need is all of the parts off of a serpentine belt Ford van that has a Saginaw pump (with a similar engine, 302/351) and maybe a new pressure hose? I have the tools and the ability just need to know what to look for.
I wanted to say thanks for this post and ideas. my 84 was annoying like a cross between a cat in heat and an old police car siren. Flushed my pump and filled with ATF and only heard couple of extremely short and barely noticeable whines in test drive. Almost totally gone now. I'm amazed....

I think you want an early 90's econoline with the same engine family (serp belt front dress) as what you are swapping on to.
I never did the e van swap, so maybe someone better informed will chime in
