BirdHunter,
Ever go to Ha-Ha Tonka. That place used to be very cool. I went there the first weekend the leaves changed every autumn through college (UM-Rolla, EE '99)
I've heard of it, a state par isn't it. We have a tradition to stop at the Denny's in Rolla. I'd been going ot htere for years with dad and the first year just me and some buds went on my 17th birthday we stopped at Denny's at some ungodly tiem of the morning and walked in, middle of the summer time, and dern near froze to death of hypothermia. Every trip since we always stop there outof tradition now. It sounds silly but it's somethign we always remember and each time of course we have a waitress that is new (college town) and we tell her the story. We are sually excited to be there and it's always during some time of the midnight shift for them so it's kind of neat for them I guess. If you head back out that way ranger stop at St. James winery, I'm not a wine person but it's a pretty neat place and they actually had some wine I liked.
Between Lebanon and Springfield isn't it, that would just about be halfway I think. Or is it 30 miles outside of St. Louis?
I assume you train Army Ranger's. Ranger Education?
Between Springfield and Lebanon is the one.
Ranger School class 09-00 graduate. There's a picture on the website of us. I never worked at RTB (where the training occurs). I just used the training alot. Airborne, Air-Assault, Ranger, Pathfinder, Afghan Vet; even had a little signaleer time just before I left this past January. Now they want me back. Work is being cool about it, even though it puts them in a bind with personnel.
Pep I'm 24 and can relate to trying to hold your composure in a situation like that. Strangest call I've had during teh midnight shift is one night I got a call from a late night janitor about a nked guy laying in a hallway at one of our buildings, the same night I got a call from the police dept on campus that someone had smeered human poo all over a door to a sorority house. I called the custodian for that area and I almost couldn't tell him what was going on cause I was laughing so hard.

There are so few women at UMR (engineering school), I have to say you're fibbing. Maybe it was an effeminate male? Just kidding. The girl-to-guy ratio there has historically made dating impossible. Had to poke fun.
Ranger, one of my buds from high school is with the 82nd Airborne, a guy I go to church with is a retired Army Ranger Col., one of my other buds from High school is a 2nd Luet. in a Marine Amphibious Assault unit, right now he is in Fallujah. Another friend is a SGT. in a psy. ops unit in Baghdad, he use to be a tank gunner and I'm not really sure what his MOS is anymore.

I never have been in Rolla long enough to find out. I guess SMS is different though. Did you ever fish at Bennett? I also like to canoe the Niangua and have tried brown trout and smallmouth fishing it a few times about eight miles down river from the park. I'm glad I wasn't fishing for survival when I was down there,in the park I tear em up though.

Cool. Lots of benefits to the service. I had a great time. Left for family reasons that ended up not being helped by going to the civilian side. Have to admit that my wife and I are happy to be headed back. I miss my sense of purpose.

I ran at SMSU for 2 years before transfering. Anyone that thinks hard work can get you anywhere has never tried to run NCAA DIV 1 track as a cuacasion (sp? it's late and I don't care) sprinter.
Never really got into fishing and hunting stuff. But I've been to Bennet alot. It's fun to feed the fish at the hatchery ponds. If it weren't for the rag-weed, I'd visit more .
Floating the Niangua are some of my fondest memories! Some as a wide-eyed adventurous kid, others as a bleary-eyed college drunk!

I hope I didn't lead you to believe I was in the service but I wasn't. I thought about it real hard and if I had it to do over again I probably would have gone in. My dad was in the Navy during Vietnam and tried with the Seals and lasted three weeks but couldn't do the swimming. He boxed in the Navy alot and would have done it more (like on a circuit or something) but he didn't want to be toothless and messed up for years afterwards. He said his favorite mathces were when Marines were on board and they'd have matches.
A Marine recruiter called one night whle I was sstill in HS and dad answered the phone and after the guy introduced himself dad said "Don't give me that crap about Marines being tough, they're just a bunch of P######." The SGT (he was an older gentleman) on the ohter end blew up and and dad laughed and told him he use to be in the Navy and use to box with them. The SGT laughed and they talked for a good while before dad handed the phone to me.
Interservice rivalry is a hoot! I work with alot of former navy nuclear service people hear and I love to remind them their just squids. They then let me know that they won't hold my past habit of digging my own grave to sleep in every night against me (infantry SOP for patrol bases). It's fun. I saw that you weren't in the service, I just wanted to make polite conversation.

When we floated back in August it must have been college frat day on the river. We saw probably 50 completely topless gals walkig around the banks in a few spots and even saw a frat fight break out between two rival frat groups or something I don't know. We got to our take out point and the MO Water patrol guys were there and we talked to them a bit and they said they had guys up and down the river hiding in the brush radiooing ahead of problem people (mostly drug and underage violations).
Hey yall, 7 more posts and we've hit 500 replies. Does anyone know if this is a record?
See ya Pep, have a beer or two for me if your not asleep first. 1 1/2 hours left.

We were never that bad. I floated with the swim, soccer, and track teams. We had nothing to prove and just wanted to relax and have a few cold ones away from the coaches. I think it's unfortunate that the rivers aren't family friendly anymore. As a kid, my family always thought the overly polite drunk college kids were just funny. I guess things change.
Edit: what ever happened to the good ol' days when you had to pay a $5 cover to see that sort of thing?
