Nothing against the Mustang but...brought muscle cars to the "limelight", let me name a few muscle cars that came before the mustang....Chevelle, Dart, Nova, The all mighty GTO, Oldsmobile 442, Cuda. These cars were all out before the mustang, so in no way did Ford start or were the first to bring public attention to muscle cars with the mustang. They however did add to the golden age of cars before that with such beauts as the fairlane and galaxie. But mustang no... And the stock mustangs were not faster than the stock camaros. The Camaro Z28 won the 1968 and 69 Trans-Am Championships 1st Gen Camaros consistinetly beat 60's Mustangs, That isn't a boast its a fact. Thats your stock Camaro, if you want to get into COPOS and Yenko's with all aluminum 427's thats a whole nother story which im leaving out cause were not mentioning Shelby either. Also the first Camaro debuted in 1967 not 65. If you want to start talking about "bad" muscle cars do we need to mention the embarssment to the industry that is the 80's mustang.
Not every stock Camaro was faster than every stock Mustang. As for championships, blah, that depends on who's driving the car more than the car. You can give us statistics on who did what in what car, but you haven't given the potential of them. Also, the Mustang was the first ponycar, the reason for the Camaro being designed, and it turned the automotive industry upside down.
Nothing against the mustang but it sounds like the mustang isnt your favorite car. Alot of people would have to disagree with you. 8.2 million since 1964. And the mustang is alive and well with the 2005 mustang the talk of everybody today. The camaro is no more. The transam gone. The mustang a car that Ford didnt know at the time would be so succesful. 40 years later and going strong. One of the great automotive success stories of all time. Kudos to Ford and the Mustang./ An american icon. The car that started it all. Hey you just talked the wrong tune to a mustang lover. No offense to you personally. Just dont want to see the mustang run down.
The bottom line is ford always has been and always will be my vehicle of choice for the rigid standards they set and meet on every vehicle they've ever made.
It's too bad they didn't apply these 'rigid standards' to their 6.0 litre diesel motor.

The Camaro will be back, just like the t-bird. It will not be cheap, but it will be back. The Gto has temporarily replaced it, and at 350 hp, it has done quite a good job of it. Chevy had to build a car to compete in todays performance market. Jap stuff is what the kids want. The Gto better suited for that msrket. When trends in consumer demand change, the Camaro will return.
I dont know I think if the camaro was going to be back it would have been by now. The GTO is really no competition for the new 2005 Mustang. I dont know how many covers the new 2005 Mustang has been on. It seems like every performance car magazine has had it featured. It has been definatly the talk of car enthusiasts. Ive visited other GM forums and people are mad that the mustang is stealing the limelight anymore. Mad that GM has discontinued there muscle cars that were so prized by GM enthusiasts. If the people of the sixties that desighned and built these muscle cars today would come back to life they would be shocked by the demize of some of these legends. That being said. The mustang will be in a class of its own and will sell like hotcakes. Kudos to Ford on the new Mustang. The legend continues.
I think your right. I believe the 05 mustang will sell and the Camaro will be back Great then we can race the two cars and claim we have the fastest car. Flashback to the 60s all over again.
Don't forget the 06 Dodge Charger either. It will be available with both the 6.1 liter Hemi, and a 6 spd manual transmission on a RWD platform. I expect the performance to be at least as good as, if not better than the new 400 HP GTO for 2005.
I'm sure all you Ford guys will jump in and say it won't be fast enough, or it will handle poorly, but the fact is the new 300C, Magnum, Charger platform is a very solid, well handling car that owes much of it's performance to Mercedes Benz, from which many of it's parts and designs come.
I'm not saying it can't be done, but it will take a pretty fair amount of work to get the Mustang up to the level of the Vette, If for no other reason that it will be heavier and it still relies on a strut front suspension. That, and the Mustang's chassis isn't even remotely designed to come close to competing with a Vette, or any other true "sports car" for that matter. The new C6 Vettes will have 400 HP in the base models, and the Z06 is expected to be around 500. The base model C6 will nearly equal the current Z06. Better be a pretty stout Mustang.
I don't expect that out of the base Charger either, but if Dodge offers up an SRT version, who knows what it may hold. I've already heard there is an SRT version of the Magnum coming shortly that is supposed to be very impressive.
490/490 are some good numbers no doubt, but power alone does not mean it will compete with a Vette or Viper.
