HRT had been put up for sale by owner Thesan Capital just before the United States Grand Prix.
Attempts were made to find a buyer before the entry deadline. AUTOSPORT understands that Chinese company Chery Automobile among those involved in talks to save HRT.
Sources indicate that the team is now working to pay its creditors and that the plan is for the team to shut down without unpaid debts.
Team representatives declined to comment on the current situation.
HRT was originally launched as Campos Meta by former F1 driver Adrian Campos when the FIA invited new entries for the 2010 season.
But its first reconstitution happened before it even made the grid, as former Jordan/Midland boss Colin Kolles was parachuted in to lead a last-minute rescue when the project hit funding problems.
Kolles saw the renamed Hispania team through to the middle of the 2011 season, when it was bought by Thesan.
It was relocated to a Madrid base in an attempt to revive the Spanish team image that Campos had originally planned, with Luis Perez-Sala installed as team boss.
Designing its own car for the first time after adapting a Dallara-produced chassis in its early years, HRT hinted at progress in 2012 as it briefly closed on Marussia.
But it drifted away at the tail of the field by the end of the year, with its funding problems clearly apparent as tales of parts shortages dominated what turned out to be its final races.
HRT had beaten Marussia to 11th spot in the constructors' championship in its first two years, before falling to last in 2012.
It is the first F1 team to close down since Super Aguri's mid-2008 exit.
Ferrari has lost patience with testing ban

Luca di Montezemolo: "We are constructors, not sponsors" © Getty Images In-season testing started to be cut back in 2008 and 2009 in order to reduce costs, and with the exception of young driver tests, the only in-season test since the '08 season took place this year at Mugello. That test has been scrapped for 2013 and pre-season testing will remain at just three four-day tests before the season opener in Australia, reducing the overall amount of testing once more.
In 2005, at the height of F1's testing mileage, Ferrari took part in 155 test days during the year and Montezemolo said the shift to very limited testing had stretched his company's patience.
"It cannot be that in this sport you can't test," he said. "We've been saying this for a while and we will repeat it in the appropriate places so for the moment I don't want to add anything else.
"But our patience has run out so someone needs to think about whether they want Formula One still to have companies that invest and consider it the most advanced research bench for its own cars - as Ferrari has always done since 1950. We are constructors, not sponsors: I'm no longer happy that we can't do testing on tarmac and that you can't give any chance for young drivers to emerge."
Montezemolo went on to criticise Ecclestone - as reported on Sunday - making reference to the F1 CEO's recent comments that Ferrari's decision to question the legality of an overtaking manoeuvre by Sebastian Vettel in Brazil was "a joke".
"Since some people have used the expression "It's a joke" in recent days, I would like to say that this [the lack of testing] is the real "joke". Yes, I'm referring to one of Ecclestone's phrases: my father always taught me that you have to have respect your elders, above all when they reach the point that they can no longer control their words. So I will stop there. Certainly, old age is often incompatible with certain roles and responsibilities."
Maybe next they should give them the rule book on Fri for P1? Read it prior to P2! Know it all, fines otherwise, by P3.....

.
I agree with him. It is rediculous for 200+mph cars to go out to race, running flat out without testing. It's stupid. How are the constructors supposed to put out their best product with limited or no testing?
Can you see the NFL or soccer or NBA ...any sport saying no practice/testing
IMO...the ONLY reason for the ban was Ferrari's test track next door to the factory
And I see that Austin is still scheduled for Nov 17th. Winter in Texas!

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Which series is running one alcohol? It's not a breakthrough. Just as long as they all run the same fuel it's all good. But changing the minimum weight of the cars to make up for additional required equipment, I don't think so. I would be happy to get rid of the electrical equipment. I like the idea of KERS but why on F1 cars? One minute they are talking about reducing the costs of campaigning these cars but then they throw all this added hardware into the mix.... I would rather see KERS being developed on commercial trucks, those guys have a lot of inertia that could be capitalized on.
