I drive a bone stock '78 150, 300 with a 3spd. Couldnt love the truck more. He's in great shape, runs and drives like a dream. Oh, he's got 335xxx miles on him. Only problem so far was the shift linkage broke and the only company that makes a replacement is ford (supposedly) and that is ungodly expensive, so i did a floor conversion. but that has nothing to do with the engine, which is awsome.

Which might explain why yours is the 438th response to this question. Seems like everybody that has the 4.9, loves it. At the least, you have to respect a dependable, long lived, and low maintenance engine such as this.
I seriously doubt you'll see the new modulars with comparable years or miles, and with minimal maintenance rating a post like this.
I had one of the earlier modulars, and at less than 30,000 on it I had less confidence in it, than I now have in my 17 year old 4.9. Sold it at less than 35,000.
Ain't progress wunnerful?
I was driving a 1985 F-150 pushing 300,000 miles that was used as a farm truck. it had a 300 with a 4 speed manual. The only major thing that had gone wrong with it was the head cracked at 200,000 miles or so and it started knocking at about the same time but we replaced the head and it kept on running. Now my grandpa drives it
Had a 1994 f-250 work truck from my job with a 5-speed manual, when they took it from me it had over 300k. original motor to my knowledge. I have personnally a 96 f-150 manual 5 speed with over 100k doesn't use or drip any oil. 4.9 is the best motor ever built ford screwed up when they stopped making it

No they didn't! Can't sell new trucks if people won't get off the old ones. If they don't wear out, you can't sell a new one! It makes perfect sense!
Also, Horsepower sells. Regardless of it's other merits (monsterous low end performance, diesel like operating charicteristics, bullet-proof reliability) people would pass it up for a "better" engine with more Horsepower.
Thus, the 4.2L V6. 205 HP from the base engine. It must be better! Who cares about the lack of low RPM gumption, the fussy head gaskets and the snapping rods. It's got more power baby! Woo Hoo!

By the way, I was being sarcastic.
That is EXACTLY what my mom said. I was ranting as to why Ford would quit making the 300 I6 to any ear willing to listen, and it happened to my poor mom's, and her responce was, "Horsepower sells." or something to that affect.
If I could drop any brand new engine into my pickup, it would be another 300 I6. I've got nothing but love for those engines.
hey guys, not that I'll be getting one any time soon, but when the time comes, what would you suggest I put in my pickup? A new 4.2?

A Diesel. I would only Buy a Ford, Chevy/GMC, or Dodge with a Diesel these days. And Honestly, I like the Cummins the best, so if I were to get a new truck, It'd be a Dodge. Which is a shame, because the Super Duty is a much nicer truck, but without a Cummins. However, we'll have to see how the new 4.5L V6 Diesel Powerstroke (comming soon, hopefully)and the 6.4L Powerstroke V8. I like International engines, (which the Powerstroke is) but the DT466, which is IMHO even better than the 5.9L Cummins, isn't available in light trucks.

This one caught my eye; "4.5L V6 Diesel Powerstroke ". Sounds like another bad to the bone 6. Where did you hear about these engines? Where can I read up on them?
