my bud, who owns a appliance store, just gave me one of his old delivery trucks, a 93' I-6, F-150 auto. he gave it to me becouse he said the motor finally siezed up for the last time and the tranny was shot. it had locked up 4 times before, no water or oil. i put oil in it and it started up and after it ran for a few minuites the rest of the motor got enough oil to run smooth. i then pulled the tranny pan, again no oil, maby a hand full of black sludge. drained the converter, cleaned it out, installed new filter, shifts like it was new. i have been driving this truck daily for about a month now. it runs perfect, does'nt smoke, and drives good. at 230,000 mi, i think i'll keep it!
there is no dought the 300 six was the best motor ford ever made good gas millage power and will run foreveri have had a bunck of then and thay all were good i i wish ford still made them because the 4.2 just dont get it done
Yeah, the 4.2 is a joke in comparison to the 300...All good things come to an end, fortunately the world is 'littered' with F-150s with 300s. I guess that's one advantage of being the best selling vehicle in the world. We can always find another one! I have a friend with the 4.2 and he is extrememly disappointed in it's inability to tow. We should have a tow down. I think we may have the same or similar axle ratio, too. There's nothing like the low revving, high torque 300, man!!!!!
I have a 1987 F250 HD, original I6 was rebuilt with 221000 on it, tranny and rear end rebuilt shortly after that, now it has 246000.
Giving it a face lift with a 1995 donor with good body. Building a flat bed for it, rust checking soon, new paint and body work for cab and dog house. This truck was originally my dads who bought it new. Construction work including concrete, drywall, plastering, and pulling a backhoe couldn't kill it.
I love this old truck, and for now it is a project, but when she is done will see the road again!!
196,xxx on my 92 f-150 I just had it short blocked and the guy that did the work could not believe how good it looked. And I have not been very kind to it. The only problem he could find was a bad cam thrust bearing.
This is my first post on this forum....I had long heard fantastic tales about the storied 300 Ford six. I finally was able to get a 1984 F-150 4x4 with granny 4-speed with 91,000 miles on it. It runs strong, like a brand new one, even though the prior owner badly-abused it by grossly overloading it, not changing oil for 4 years and 20,000 miles and doing absolutely no maintenance on it. It wasn't running when I bought it, traded a cord of firewood and a used snowblower for it. Had to use penetrating oil to remove the original 22 year old spark plugs which were firmly rusted in the block. No air cleaner, had to suck out the carb with a vaccuum and three cans of carb cleaner, but it started right up and ran great! Flushed out the radiator, water was the consistency of thin mud. Most probably the original antifreeze from the factory. The front tie-rod ends were badly bent, spent $80 for new ones and an alignment, new wires, dist cap, rotor, fuel filter, junkyard air cleaner. Have about $350 into a fantastic running truck. With a set of $15 thrift store studded snow tires, I was pulling brand new pickups out of mountain snow on a steep logging road. With a cord of wood going over a 6 percent freeway grade, it easily pulled 75 mph without overheating. Empty, it easily attains 85 mph. Runs as smooth as silk. Does not leak or use or burn a drop of oil, I've put on almost 3,000 miles.
The body is a battered and rusty hulk but it rides and drives very comfortably, much much better than my old 69 Dodge Powerwagon with buckboard suspension. Someone tossed a toilet through the rear sliding window (PO worked in house demolishing), no tailgate and the hood is badly sprung.
174k on the 90 XLT Lariot ext cab. Its my teenage trainer so it has a few dents and I think the rear seal is going since it has an oil leak thats keeps getting worse. A great work horse truck!
94 F 150 here with 179,000 and not so much as one leak, but I'm getting ready to pull it and build it for an old street rod,, haven't seen many with a 300-6 so it outta be pretty cool.
