Scangauge Values

I tried to search and I am sure the information is on here but is there a list of ideal Scangauge reading values.
for example what is a good range for the transmission temperature to be running at. I am up to 430K miles and while I regularly flushed and changed transmission fluid up to 250K roughly I was advised that if I changed fluids I was likelto cause more problems than if I simply left it alone if it was running fine

thanks in advance Mark

I'm at 240k and I still flush my transmission every 20k miles or so (the manual states 30k). My flush is a repetitive drain and re-fill. Please do NOT ignore filter changes.

From Piolet (see his attachment at the bottom of his first post):

You were advised poorly.

Ok appreciate the advice. It was advice from the Ford dealership mechanic where i used to have it done as they had the flushing machine ( and at what I considered great expense I might add). He said that if the fluid was nice and clean and I was not having any issues at that sort of mileage which was probably around 350K as the previous flush was at 300K, that flushing it could cause issues.
I would note that they were using BG Universal Synthetic ATF 3124, made by BG products and not motorcraft and if I remember right people were very particular as to what Tranny fluid should be used in the 6.0.
Fluid looks nice and clean now at 430K but it hasn’t been changed since 300K, but I am guessing the consensus here would be to go ahead and change.
while my policy is to keep aircraft quality maintenance on the truck as I dont want to end up broken down on the side of the road with a truckload of dogs I also dont want to cause problems for myself

You can drain and re-fill 3 times (with 20-50 miles of driving in between) for the same price or less as having someone do a flush for you. Also, i REALLY don't care for the thought of anyone using any flush chemicals!

I would only use LV or SP. Past discussions indicated that Valvoline MaxLife was probably OK also. Several other folks have had success with other fluids, but WHY use them?

I assume you maintained your 30k minimum interval on changing the external filter at a minimum?

8 quarts.

Yes there is an internal "coarse" filter. I choose to change it out about every 100k miles.

So ..... I'm guessing that the external filter hasn't been changed in quite a while?

Like Bismic, I have done 3 drain and fills on our Honda transmission over the years instead of single drain/fill. My procedure was drain, fill, then drive it out on the highway, back to the house, and repeat that twice more. Kind of a pain. I eventually changed that to just draining and filling the transmission every oil change for three oil change intervals and then skip on that for the next two oil changes. Then start over. That is far above and beyond the manufacturer's recommended fluid changes.

But since you haven't done it for a long time now, it makes sense to get a good change done in shorter order.

There is also a DIY transmission flush procedure listed in the 6.0 Tech Folder that is a 100% fluid flush you can do yourself. Here is a link to that thread and it includes a nice youtube video that I also linked below. I have done this procedure on my 6.0 F250 with my wife in the cab cranking and shifting through the gears while I monitored the fill bucket and suction tube below the truck. Worked great!

And shoot - if you are taking the pan off, you might want to consider getting the 6.4 trans pan and its filter... Then it's 9 quarts to fill...

This is from when I did mine back in 2015 or so:
Trans Pan: 8C3Z-7A194-B
Filter: 8C3Z-7A098-D

The gasket is reusable, be sure the seal for the neck of the filter comes out with the filter - if it doesn't be careful removing it, do not score the walls on the pick up port! You will never have to change your front filter again, it doesn't hurt and make sure you leave a filter in there - seems running without one screws with the flow to the trans oil cooler. 9 Qts of SP or LV on refill. The new internal filter will filter 100% of the trans fluid whenever the truck is running (versus the little front bypass unit that is max of 10% and that's with a fully warmed trans). You'll want to change the new internal filter every 60K or less.

Good luck!
