for example what is a good range for the transmission temperature to be running at. I am up to 430K miles and while I regularly flushed and changed transmission fluid up to 250K roughly I was advised that if I changed fluids I was likelto cause more problems than if I simply left it alone if it was running fine
thanks in advance Mark

I would note that they were using BG Universal Synthetic ATF 3124, made by BG products and not motorcraft and if I remember right people were very particular as to what Tranny fluid should be used in the 6.0.
Fluid looks nice and clean now at 430K but it hasn’t been changed since 300K, but I am guessing the consensus here would be to go ahead and change.
while my policy is to keep aircraft quality maintenance on the truck as I dont want to end up broken down on the side of the road with a truckload of dogs I also dont want to cause problems for myself

I would only use LV or SP. Past discussions indicated that Valvoline MaxLife was probably OK also. Several other folks have had success with other fluids, but WHY use them?
I assume you maintained your 30k minimum interval on changing the external filter at a minimum?

Yes there is an internal "coarse" filter. I choose to change it out about every 100k miles.
So ..... I'm guessing that the external filter hasn't been changed in quite a while?

But since you haven't done it for a long time now, it makes sense to get a good change done in shorter order.
There is also a DIY transmission flush procedure listed in the 6.0 Tech Folder that is a 100% fluid flush you can do yourself. Here is a link to that thread and it includes a nice youtube video that I also linked below. I have done this procedure on my 6.0 F250 with my wife in the cab cranking and shifting through the gears while I monitored the fill bucket and suction tube below the truck. Worked great!

Trans Pan: 8C3Z-7A194-B
Filter: 8C3Z-7A098-D
The gasket is reusable, be sure the seal for the neck of the filter comes out with the filter - if it doesn't be careful removing it, do not score the walls on the pick up port! You will never have to change your front filter again, it doesn't hurt and make sure you leave a filter in there - seems running without one screws with the flow to the trans oil cooler. 9 Qts of SP or LV on refill. The new internal filter will filter 100% of the trans fluid whenever the truck is running (versus the little front bypass unit that is max of 10% and that's with a fully warmed trans). You'll want to change the new internal filter every 60K or less.
Good luck!
