I have a 97 B4000 with 152,000 miles and was wondering what to expect
out of my trans. I replaced the trans fluid and screen at 50,000 and had
the system totally flushed at 100,000 and was about to have it flushed again. No problems up to now...shifts great. Any thoughts on how long
it should last. Thanks,
Fishhead
If you drive it sensibly and service it regularly, there is no reason at all why it will not last for 250,000 miles (sometimes more). I am a very firm believer that oil changes are the cheapest maintenance that there is and transmissions are no different. I change the fluid and filter in my issued vehicle at 30,000 miles. I have never had transmission problems, ever, and I have worn out five issued vehicles. I put in the area of 150,00 to 200,000 on each of them. I might add that sometimes those miles are not easy ones. My personal vehicles all have standard transmissions but the outfit that I work for uses only automatics.
Thanks for that info Dan. Some say leave them alone and don't service them
and some say service regularly. I've talked to several mechanics about changing
the fluid and they also have different opinions on it. Some say that dirt and trash
introduced during fluid changes causes most of the problems. The auto
makers are making some of them without dip sticks to check the fluid level.
They are completely sealed. Like yourself, I have always serviced regularly
with no problems. That fluid gets dirty and burned just like motor oil in my
opinion.
Thanks again Dan,
Fishhead
