Checking Trans Fluid

Should the transmission fluid level be checked with the motor running? Or can it be checked either motor on or off? Thanks in advance.

monty0,

Checked with the engine running, at normal operating temperature with vehicle parked on level ground.

Hope this helps

drive the truck about 9 miles and then check it with the motor running.

reason transmission fluid expands as it heats up , and it has to be running as when it is not all the fluid is in the pan, with it running several quarts are circulating inside the tranny which reduces the static amount of fluid on the stick
