I installed my RetraxPro MX (80384) this weekend also. I agree with everything Top Speed1 stated above. I didn't need knee pads though because I made my brother and nephew get in the back and tighten the clamps. WIN!

Smart!

My son is 20 and off chasing girls (most likely). My wife is 105lbs soaking wet, she did help me get the cover in place however.

Deciding on a tonneau for my new F450... I spoke to a dealer today (TonneauCovered.com) and was surprised at a couple of things when trying to decide between Truck Covers USA (roll or work JR), Pace Edwards Full Metal Jackrabbit and the Retrax Pro MX.

TCU Roll: $1599 delivered
TCU Work JR: $2299 delivered (Not sure why the toolbox, as cool as it is, adds $700)
Jackrabbit FM: $1499 delivered
Retrax Pro: $1699 delivered

They thought the Pace Edwards was the bottom of these three, so I'm considering the TCU or Retrax. Here was the surprise. They said that the TCU work JR costs more because it is so heavy to ship. How much heavier?
Retrax shipping weight: 90#
TCU Work JR whipping weight: Tool box: 60#, hardware kit 16#, cover 290#, total 366#! Just the cover alone is > 3x the weight of the Retrax. They really like the Retrax, and I think it looks nicer than the TCU, but 1/3 of the weight? I have lots of headroom in truck capacity, so I'm drawn towards the heavier cover thinking it will be more durable. I also like how the TCU can have a lock that works via the locking tailgate and not a little key lock. The Retrax looks better to me and a lot better to my wife, so that is a plus in its column. I also like not having a strap in the bed and being able to lock it at any position.

Thoughts?

Well, do you want to open it with one hand from the side? I don't see you shifting nearly 300 lb with one hand, my little wife does my Retrax with one hand from the ground and Brutus isn't short. At 366 lbs I hope they let you install it in little pieces because the 8' Retrax can be awkward with just two people, not heavy but awkward.

As far as durability, that Retrax is pretty robust. People talk about walking on top of it and it doesn't surprise me. If I do I will take off my shoes though. Scratches. The aluminum extrusions on the Retrax are very stout and short of something like the Diamond Back which is designed to handle ATV's on top, I can't imagine anything needing to be stronger. 366 lbs is a significant impact against payload if you are towing heavy.

The shipping on the RetraxPro is 2 boxes, canister in one, rails in another. Mine is installed, looks friggen awesome, but I'm not quite willing to walk across it, lol.

Your price BTW is way better than mine ...hopefully you have the 8ft model (80384) in your quote and not the 6'-10" model that everyone seems to price fix on.

Hey everyone,

for those of you with the Retrax, can you take pictures of them. Specifically, I am trying to see the difference between the Matte finish and the glossy finish.

I'm planning on buying one when my new F250 Platinum in silver shows up but don't know if I want the Matte or Glossy finish.

Any opinions and photos greatly appreciated.

My silver Platinum (350) is due any day and i should have it sometime next week depending on the weather. I have the Retrax Pro MX sitting in my garage waiting on it and it will go on the day I take delivery. If you can wait I'd be happy to take a pic of the combo for you.

That would be fantastic! Thanks!

I hope you get your truck soon!! The only thing keeping me sane is reading these threads and shopping accessories...

My ETA is April 10th

Does it come with a tailgate seal? Does the seal interfere with Tailgate step?

Also I was reading on the F150 thread some said that in the 5.5ft box they lose the two front tiedowns, is that the case on the 6.10?

Thanks

It is a matte finish and I don't remember even having an option to choose. Very happy with it and it has handled lots of bird crap very well. It doesn't come with the seal automatically. You have to order it separately and I suggest you do. It doesn't interfere with anything and provides a great dust seal. I didn't install the seal right away and was noticing an inordinate about of silty dust in the bed. When the cover is closed there is a vacuum behind the tailgate and it naturally draws in dust. So on went the seal and 90 % of the dust is gone. It also seals against water really well also. My bed is 6 foot 8 inch and the cover does not interfere with the box link tie downs. The cover box up against the bed blocks the bolted on tie downs in the corners.

I highly recommend the matte finish, it is raining here so pictures are kinda useless. IF you had a purely show truck I'd say consider the glossy, but if you are going to use the truck matte is the bomb. EVERY truck in our future will have one, PERIOD!

I went with the revolution By extang
So far I am very impressed with it my last cover I had Velcro on the sides it fell apart within five years this is the main reason I went with the revolution no velcro at all it's seals very well and no wrinkles

This was straight out of the box still needed to get out in the sun to stretch out the wrinkles
