I had the BakFlip on my 2011. My biggest complaint was that it froze to my tailgate in the winter and I couldn't open my tailgate on cold days.
I have the MX on my 2015 truck and it doesn't freeze to the trailgate and you can shut the gate first or last. It's just the difference of the small rubber weather. But being in cold weather I think it's a big difference
i just installed a truck covers usa american roll cover on my short bed. Overall I am pleased with it.
Pros
Its rock solid and feels like it will out last truck.
Its butter smooth opening closing.
Love the quick release latch that allows you open cover without key after opening tailgate.
The pull strap is heavy duty seatbelt material inatead of cheap webbing.
They include a nice velcro patch under driver rail that pull strap sticks to keep it out of bed and near tail of truck.
There are no exposed locking mechansim to get hung and bent on cargo when opening and closing.
There 4 drains instead if 2.
I am comparing this to a roll in lock i had for 5 years. And i think it is a better product.
Cons
Its only 85% water resistent just had violent storm here. Dropped 3 inches of rain in hour, 60 mile an hour winds, storm caused 6 tornados in area, and truck was backed up steep drive way. I had water infiltration at tailgate and a little on corners. Cargo stayed dry most water ran down bed sides and tailgate and straight out bottom of bed. I expected on flat ground and normal rain infiltraion will be minimal but but definitly not water tight.
Also experienced on hard brake when hitting large bump with cover half open it poped over stop and opened all they way. Its never done this when fully closed.
Price 1625.00 to door from tonnuecovers.com
i would love to hear from someone with retrax how water tight is it compared to my experience.
Hey 1959, I am thinking about the Diamondback cover also, which one are you getting, how much and where are you getting it from, thanks so much!
I'm getting the H.D. With the LineX. I just found out about them maybe a month ago. I don't know the cost or were to get them but I live in Canada so I'm thinking I might drive down to Montana and buy one and mount it there. I'm sure if I had it delivered in Canada it would cost $5000 or more dollars. I have a 8' box so I can load 2 quads on top of the cover and still have the full box to use. Plus stuff locked in the box is more secure than in the cab. It looks to be extremely well-made and will probably outlast a few trucks.
I personally like the roll up covers.
My father in law has the low profile Truxedo on his F-150. It is a very nice cover and he is extremly happy with it. My brother has the Aceess cover on his Dodge, also an extremely nice cover.
I went with the Extang Express cover because it is more of a "top rail" mount, so the rails only extend into the bed about 1/2" versus close to 2" with the other covers. It is not quite as low profile, but it was a good trade off for me. I would rather have a slightly higher profile cover than the rails that come into the bed so far which is sort of a pain when hauling certain loads. There are a ton of nice covers out there and all of them will have some trade off.
PS. I did find out that one big company actually owns several of the cover brands like Extang, Truxedo, Under cover, Bed rug etc. The site sates that "Extang and Truxedo joined forces to form truck hero". https://truck-hero.com/about
I have an Access soft cover on my F150, which has been great. I'm considering a trifold or soft cover for my F450 because I'd like to have an 18" tall auxillary tank. I figure I can still carry pipes and boards by placing them on top of the auxillary tank that way. If I go with a notched tank and roll top cover, I can't do that.
The issue with my access cover is that the rails stick up 1" and I already have clearance issues with my fifth wheel. Many low profile soft covers don't seem to hold up as well.

I recommend the Truxedo Lo Pro. I've had one on my current truck for 6 years with no issues. I had one on my previous truck, and I know the guy that owns it now. After 11+ years, that Lo Pro is still going strong.
Can't use a tri-fold cover if you tow a fifth wheel like I do. This one works the best without Velcro. The Velcro gets dirty and loses its grip strength.

I'll second this. I put a Truxedo on my 2004 F150 when it was new. It has lived everywhere from AK to FL. Just this last year (12 years later), the edges started fraying. I called Truxedo and since I still had my original receipt (I'm a bit OCD when it comes to record keeping) they sent me a new cover with upgraded velcro at no charge! This company stands behind their product!!
Now, if only they produced a roll-up hard-cover...
I've had many of the various models. This is by far the best looking most functional cover I've come across. It sits down even with the bed rails and after 2.5 years still looks new.
I got the Ford Branded Bakflip model, the Rev through my dealership. It's a hard cover similar to the MX4. It's been excellent. No leaks at all and it has had 12" of wet snow piled on it in the morning with no sagging. It's simple to install and is easy to use. The rear cable for opening it actually has a handle hanging down for use with gloves.
