So here's my problem, Ive just done a hole lot of work on her
- heads machined with new vales, injector cups
-changed every seal i can think of
-water pump, batteries, alternator, new valve cover gaskets, 8 new glow plugs, hpop hoses
I knew i had injector or two failing cold (I'd get a lot of white smoke if the temperature was below 10c/50F) So when I finished I took it in to ford for them to figure out which injectors were failing cold.... They told me #3 and #8 so I went to Napa and grabbed 2 remain injectors and installed them. Got her going a little rough but not bad (thought it was just air in the system) put 110km/68m on the odometer and still rough. So I did a CCT and it told me #3 failed . I did a buzz test all was good, I pulled the VC and made sure the injector was properly seated (it was). I pulled the connector out of #3 with no change, I pulled the connector #1 there was a change in RPM as well as #5. It seems like i got a bad remain.... Doesn't seem like its firing..
Am I missing anything? Thanks Guys!!!

I ohm the injectors and I got 3.1 across the board so I figured what the heck poppet valve clearance on my new (remain) injector..... couldn't even my .0015 feeler under there, #5 on the other hand was .003. So it looks like I need to replace #3 again..... Thanks Alliant.
Everyone agree? haha

Reason: Update
3 and 8 typically fail the built-in Cylinder Contribution Test - even with good injectors. The factory Cam Position Sensor failed too often, so they changed the design and replaced the old one on recall. The newer CPS gives false alarms on 3 sometimes and 8 most times - so there's no way to know if those two are good or bad strictly with a CCT.
Remans fail - it happens... but connections on the UVCH fail far more often. Before going much further, it would be nice to know how your connections are - the 42-pin connector link in my signature will help there. While you're clicking links in my signature, you might try that OBDII tools link as well.
Given that you've checked the gaps on the poppets, you are likely a candidate for a spread of injectors. I chose new... I think I have a link on that in my signature as well.
You dont want to replace just a couple injectors, do all 8. You can have all 8 rebuilt to new for under $500.

Yes many people replace just one or two but its not the correct way to do things. Its like if you have one bad cylinder in your engine and only fix that cylinder, you now have one good hole and 7 wore out ones.
Yeah that's what I get for listening to a stealership! I read about #3 failing the CCT after I grabbed those injectors. Since installing those new injectors the white smoke is gone, its -15c/5f and the exhaust looks normal now. I bought my 7.3 this spring and I've been learning a lot about my truck.... sometimes to late tho. I owned a 6.4 before and I'm glad own a 7.3 now! No more cab pulling!!!!
I ohm tested the injectors off the 42 pin connector, Thanks Tugly for the info! #3,4,5,7 ohmed at 3.3-3.4 and #1,2,6,8 at 3.1, so all about 3 ohms and pretty close eh?
Do I need any specialty tools to rebuild my injectors? I use my truck for work and I usually only have the weekends to work on her, so sending out the injectors wont really work.
But it makes prefect scene what your saying Osmond4x4.
Just need to get her to 100% and that injector is the last piece of the puzzle. Already had to turn down one job need it done, so I called napa and they have another injector on its way.... hopefully it will be a good one! just in time for christmas vacation.
If you slap down a hefty deposit, you don't have to have your truck down beyond thee day it takes to swap injectors. I put the deposit down when I swapped mine.
I am kind of in the same boat you are I may be pulling my heads off and going through the injectors for fun and cleaning. Figure as long as I have them off why not.
