I haven't messed with these motors as much as the powerstrokes
But I got 1 for my son and was wondering how to tell if its got a bad injector
Runs and drives but to me its got a miss but I opened up the lines to the injectors and can't seem to figure out what 1 is missing
Smokes a little more than I like so can a injector stick open part way on these?
Add a diesel fuel additive to the tank. Drive 1 or 2 tanks of fuel with additive through it and see if it improves. Could be partially clogged. If it doesn't improve then one of the injectors is probably worn. I recommend replacing all of them due to age and mileage.
There's a few ways to find an obvious bad one.You can feel them.If one is very hot you'll know. You can use a long screwdriver placed up against the injector body and place your ear up to the handle. If it's not got a nice distinct click, you'll know it's bad too.
You can even measure resistance of the glow plugs while the engine is running. There's an old thread here titled something like (probably not exactly) "using glow plugs to super tune your engine".If you find one with much higher resistance, that injector is likely bad/dirty too.
These injectors are not like the PS injectors. These ones are medium ware items and it's recommended to change them every 100k miles. Some folks have let these go so long, their engines have just 3/4 or even half the power it should.I've been in one and it was a sad state lol.The guy put it to the floor and it crawled up to speed like it was just a little 4 cyl under the hood(and old one I mean too, from the 80's lol). Anyone would think the engines are complete dogs if they didn't know any better running one with high miles on the IP and injectors.
