I'm still reading on it, but I think it affects CarPlay and Android Auto allowing you to use Google maps vs Sirius Navigation. Don't hold me to it since I'mm still researching it.
The new version contains the following updates:
Updated voice recognition engine.
Bluetooth phone, media, and Wi-Fi improvements.
Navigation user interface improvements (if equipped).
Android Auto for supported devices.
Apple CarPlay for supported devices with hardware upgrade.
If you have a 2017, so you are CarPlay ready now. You shouldn't need the new hub. Since the 17's were shipped as CarPlay enabled. Note: not sure if this is for the F150 or all F series, since this info is from the F150 site.
This update is adding android auto and CarPlay to the sync 3 2016 vehicles. Shouldn't need to run it on our trucks.
Yeah, that what I am think, it only fixes a few bugs, but no new updates. Not sure if there is any differences in the 2.0 and the 2.2 version.
Edited:This is the screen after it is updated, so there is a difference in the Version 2.0 and 2.2 and the build number.
Edited: I was also under the impression that you couldn't use Google maps with Version 2.0. So, im wondering if 2.2 fixed it. This is a photo of the F150 site. I still me try and loaded it on minem becuase I couldn't get Google maps to work with my Galaxy S6.
How do you get the update? I went into Sync, settings, general and automatic system update when connected to Wi-Fi, search for updates and it was not able to find anything over the 2. 0 version

On the first post on this thread is link. Just go there and look around page 46-56. There are a couple of guys that set up servers to down load the software. There are two versions of the software. Version for NAVIGATION units and a Version for NON NAVIGATION units. Just have to read the post, but basically download the correct version to your hard drive. Unzip the update to a folder. Copy the contents from the zip file and place it on a formatted clean USB zip drive. Take it to you truck turn on your truck and place the zip drive in your USB and it will start updating your unit. From what I read, this will not damage or cause any problems with your unit, but I haven't tried it yet. This is from the guy that put the upgrade out...
"Android Auto is available on 2017 models with SYNC 3; owners of 2016 models with SYNC 3 are required to perform a software upgrade (Available Late 2016) Apple CarPlay is available on 2017 models with SYNC 3; owners of 2016 models with SYNC 3 are required to perform a software upgrade (available early 2017) and purchase a hardware upgrade through your dealer." This is the USB module in the F150 to get carplay to work.
I've read on this site that Google maps will not work with Navigation with Android auto. When I hooked up my Galaxy S6 the other day I couldn't get Google maps to work with Navigation either with Version 2.0 on my unit. Those that have upgraded this new Version 2.2 from Version 1.0 and 2.0 on the F150 site have gotten Google maps to work and from what I've read it is not only for Upgrading from Version 1 to 2.2. It supposed to work with version 2.0 to 2.2 also with the F series and other Ford models. This upgrade evidently just fixes some bugs in the software, but no new application upgrade. But again, I haven't install on my unit yet so, if you do you are doing it at your own risk.
I know I like to use Waze or Torque pro and it is a pain to get to them, have to start them first then once plugged in, you can hit the button that you press for close all, and tehn tap the app you want to reopen.
I've updated as well. Will play with it tonight/tomorrow to see what changes I notice. At this time I have not noticed any major just yet excluding the information screen saying what version I am at.
The other minor changes in Android Auto is that in the maps its easier to get fuel prices, coffee locations etc. Also tells you when the next Exit is coming up on the freeway. For the phone its easier to pull up recent calls and missed calls. For Music its easier to pull up the differnt apps (Pandora and Google Music).
Also Mobile Apps tells me it "needed to be updated". I'm in the process of updatting but its taking a long time. Don't know if its updating or staying on the same screen. Will update later if it updates/fails
