Stewart, good catch. That is the shunt. If the wiring is still connected correctly and functioning, there has to be a problem with either the after-market chip or the PCM. Or I suppose there could be loose connections between the glow plugs and the shunt. Or are the glow plugs not all working?
Larry
Give that man a prize- yes we got the Excursion back last night. There is no shunt issue. Our mechanic is really phenomenal! He was 10 steps ahead of us the whole time. He had removed the chip from the old PCM and it didn't help so they replaced the PCM and all is well. They drove it enough miles and took it to the smog place and got it smogged for me. It passed. Hallelujah! The place where he got the PCM said they are going to start stocking them because the demand for PCMs is enormous! After two weeks and numerous hours spent by them diagnosing, testing, retesting, tweaking etc. they only charged us $300 for labor!!! God love 'em! He said he wouldn't have felt good about charging us for all the time they spent on it. They have a customer for life, no kidding. Highly recommended in Orange, California. Wow, great news. I hope you can now concentrate on helping your family through this difficult time of life. God bless you for being willing to help out.
I am glad that Fernando was able to navigate this difficult troubleshooting swamp while holding your hand. These 7.3 engines are relatively simple when compared to the newer "common rail" versions, but there are a few unknown problems out there apparently. It has to be a relief to get this problem solved so that you can go back to driving your baby!
Please do not hesitate to visit from time to time--your story was intriguing!

Now it's all about getting as much proper information discovered regarding when the switch was made, so it can be disseminated on the forum.
Stewart
The switch was made on October 24, 1999.
Excursions built from Job #1, which was July 19, 1999 for the first model year of Excursion (2000) through and until October 23, 1999 received the regular energized coil relay with a bank to bank diagnostics shunt.
Excursions built on or after October 24, 1999, have the solid state Glow Plug Control Module that provides two way communication with the PCM to diagnose each glow plug individually.
So basically, the first 90 days of Excursion production squeaked out of the barn without a GPCM, and were Californiaized with the shunted relay, along with the attendant left and right bank diagnostics calibration.
