Be very very very very very careful here! Me and my brother drove 75 miles to Colorado Springs from Denver to pick up a Taurus SHO engine from some guy who had removed it "not too long ago" and "it ran fine when pulled."

Well, phuque me... the guy lied, he stored the thing outside in the rain for who knows how long but it was rusted together inside. At a minimum, ensure such an engine turns over with a wrench on the crankshaft.

As for purchasing the EFI stuff, well, remember most people remove that stuff because they're having problems with it they can't or won't figure out... but it would probably (might) be easier to try and resurrect the EFI stuff if your only real damage is rodent-eaten wiring.

I look at your engine and shudder at the problems you're going to have getting the belts & pulleys lined up, I'm anticipating that rust might cause a problem (and then again maybe it won't, just be sure to clean up the stuff used for electrical grounds).

I was able to drop both fuel tanks after work today. Working on my back, in the grass, in the backyard, with a jack and cinder block to hold the gas tank brings back memories of when I was young and doing goofy ****. PO told me the rear tank was full and the pump had went out.....it was empty so the jack was not needed. Took the fill line of the rear tank and the inside of the neck is rusted and I think I can hear rust inside the tank. I'm going to pull the pumps tomorrow at the station and see what they look like inside but I forsee purchasing another rear tank. I read that you can purchase a 38 gal tank that was an option back then. I wonder if I can get the hold down straps for one still.... anyway progress continues.

I am going to look at it tomorrow and for sure I will check to see if I can turn it over by hand. I'm going to pull the plugs first and then try turning the crank with my hands. Also going to get a wooden dowel and check the stroke and see if it in fact has been stroked. Also going to check and see if the distributor still points to #1 and check the timing marks. I have to say that the pictures I took make it look a little worse than it is but I am going to clean everything up for sure.

38 gallons was not an option.

You can use a Bronco tank and skid plate but you must make a new crossmember and you lose the spare tire.

Spectra makes an aftermarket 38 gallon poly tank kit that comes with straps and sender.

Found this....looks like you can just buy a sending unit without a pump and then I can just add the hose in place of the pump.

I have had really poor luck with that Spectra stuff, some of their components lasted only past one year for me and so I go OEM on this stuff if I can.

I doubt you can get a dowel in. Use a straw.

Like Gary says, use a straw, don't ever do it with something that snaps ... You'll likely be pulling a head!

Been there done that ... I got stuck pulling a ricer head because my ex brother in law used a chain saw file to try and find true TDC!

Of course he didn't tell me until after he started it ... It wasn't pretty!

He is Ex for a reason!

-Enjoy

So I pulled the pumps out of the tanks, as I suspected the rear tank is full of rust. I didn't even take a picture of the pump cause it was so bad. The front tank wasn't quite as bad. It definitely has signs of sitting up for a long time, it has a film of gunk on the bottom of it. The float for the pump is deteriorated and it has a little rust on it as well. Anyone have suggestions for what to use inside the tank to break up the funk? Been awhile since I have cleaned a tank.

Flash didn't really help but you can see the residue inside the tank.

To break up the funk use a steam roller as it makes throwing the old tank away lots easier. Then buy a new tank. They aren't expensive, and it is NOT worth the effort to try and salvage one.

I put a chain in a tank, added about 3 gallons of gas, and two of us shook the tank as hard as we could for several minutes. And we did that about three times. When I put the tank back in I had so much silt that I clogged filters, and it got past two filters and clogged the accelerator pump discharge nozzles. So, I spent $30 in gas to clean a tank that continued to give problems when I could have replaced it for $100. I won't do that again.

Just to update: Went and looked at the truck I found on craigslist. Turns out the motor is just a 302, not stroked but it is a complete motor and turns freely by hand. Assuming it has a C6 since I didn't look at the pan and also does have the duraspark ignition module with harness and distributor. Still contemplating purchasing both the engine and trans but really have no where to keep them.

Quick question, as I am looking for a new fuel tank for the front I keep seeing a 19 gal replacement offered, will this fit in place of the 16 gal that was original? If I can get a few more gallons for damn near the same price with no issues then I may as well but then I need to check the measurements to see if I need different straps as well.

IIRC the 16 was used in the SWB trucks and the 19 in the LWB trucks.
You can not fit a 19 in place of the 16 as the tank is too long and hits a cross member. Yes I thought the same as I have a 19 but it would not fit.
Also the straps are different and could not use the 19 on the 16 tank so bought new ones. About a week later I found the old straps in a bin.

also know the 16 & 19 side tanks each use a different sender.

Thank you sir that makes sense. I figured I would just go back with the 16 anyway. Looking up parts now and I just wish I could get everything from one vendor but seems like I will have to use several to get a decent price as well as decent parts. Not trying to go cheapest here.
