What about the one mentioned above? The 71 CJ cam?
Don't forget the NOS 72 CJ cam that's available. As far as I know factory Ford cams don't have to be Broken In. You would just have to advance the cam to bring it back to the 71's specs.
Pulled the main caps. Main bearings look ok, about what I expected... So I think I'll just clean this baby out and slap it back in with a new timing chain and oil pump.
Made out of a different metal. Stronger. Like Chebie cams used to wear out after about 100.000 miles but a Ford cam didn't. I've never heard of a Ford tech winding an engine up to break one in.
Just looked. I have a 1970 genuine Ford shop manual. It states "18. operate the engine at fast idle and check all hose connections and gaskets for leaks. When the engine temperature has stabilized adjust the engine idle speed and idle mixture"
So you guys see, They are not breaking in the cam. simply checking all around it.
Garrett. Flat tappet lifters normally spin a tad in the bores as the engine is running. That's why normally a worn cam lobe also has a lifter with a smooth but concave surface. Yours look like the lifters were not doing that mellow spinning. Gunk in their bores? Oil or pressure related? DON'T use Penzoil! Ford Motorcraft or Valvoline my personal Favs.
As far as the old cams go, core for a custom ground cam????
