I read part of the article (just couldn't read all that at once). Its informative and fact based, but he repeats himself a lot and gets a bit petty by criticizing the uninformed over and over.
With all that was said in that article, I won't use a modern oil in a flat tappet cam engine for break in. I would at least look at Valvoline VR1, Joe Gibbs, Brad Penn (who he praised in his article for backing up his claims, and yet they also sell a high zinc oil) or the like, for a good mineral based oil with higher zinc than standard conventional oil does. None of those oils should be over concentrated in zinc, just higher than standard, good for break in, IMO..
Came home, poured the coolant in it, got it started up and was running pretty good. But now somehow I have ignition problems. It ain't running worth a ****, popping out of the driver side exhaust at random, vacuum gauge is all over the place... And I don't know wtf is going on!
I'm pretty sure it's an ignition problem. I don't know why or how, but it's acting exactly like an ignition problem.
I think you better drop ever thing & go visit your girl friend for an over night stay to clear your Head some. So you can get back to thinking straight for fixing it again.
Things my one of my old girl friends 50 yrs ago. What she'd do was come into the garage at night while. I would be working on my 55 cp in the evening and take my mine off of every thing for a while.
The best part we did not even need to talk she just looked into my eyes and that's all it took she gave me that look.
Well after sitting overnight, it's even worse! Now it won't start at all.
So far, I've reset the distributor and timing. Tested my pertronix unit (it's good)
Checked rocker/valve action under both valve covers. That's all good.
I stopped for breakfast but I'm going back out to test the coil and whatever else I can think to do.
One thing I forgot to mention it seems, is that it was running great yesterday when I first got it going again. My brother was topping off the coolant in the radiator as I was feathering the throttle up around 2500-3000 rpm making sure the cam was getting plenty of oil splash. He overfilled it and it burped out a significant amount of water/coolant and the fan sent it everywhere. THAT is when trouble started.
I've tested all the ignition. Can't find a problem. I managed to get it so it will at least start, but it doesn't really run. However I pulled the plugs and several look like they're fouled out. So I'm getting a fresh set to put in.
Yeah I should. As I am not getting anywhere with it.
New plugs made it run. Not good though.
Even though I can't find a problem, I am still leaning towards it being an ignition problem because the tachometer isn't reading smoothly or even correctly for that matter. I unhooked it just for the sake of trying and it made no difference.
My coil checks out OK on the meter. But i think my next step might be to replace it.
Something changed suddenly yesterday at the time of the radiator burping out. Whether or not that is the cause or merely a coincidence, I don't know... What can change suddenly and cause this to happen?
