I got this pic from another post. I might be asking a dumb question, but I have always wondered. What is the purpose of this valve? It seems like this is a problem part in the steering set up from the factory. Why can't you remove the valve and make it a solid bar that connects the PA to the knuckle arm? Somebody educate me.
Basically it is supposed to direct the power steering fluid to the correct side of the assist cylinder. On a later gearbox an internal valve activated by the input shaft does the same thing with a whole lot less chance for leaks. The valve in question also induces some natural play in the steering system since the part attached to the Pittman arm has to be able to move.
