Psyclopse's "up from the ashes" build thread.
I haven't had a chance to work on anything, and I haven't been on here. A lot of things have come up.
First, we've been preparing for my wife's surgery for Chiari Malformation, which meant getting the house ready for when she returned home. Well, the surgery was November 30th, and besides my freaking out a lot, everything went fine. I brought her home December 4th, but those few days at the hospital, I was making round trips between home and the hospital (we have dogs, so I had to come home). From our place to the hospital in Fort Wayne is an hour and a half, so I was spending 3 hours on the road each day in a 4x4 Super Duty on less-than-stellar Indiana roads: expensive and exhausting.
And now that she's home, I'm fighting with the V.A. (most specifically, the Voc Rehab program) over getting into school. I had signed up for the program with the promise that if I did 6 months of volunteer work, I'd be sent to school. Well, I did my 6 months, and now they're jerking me around. I'll spare the details, but it is pretty stressful at a time we really don't need the extra stress.
And to top it off, we're having vehicle problems out the yazoo. The Jeep is down again, and the SD is pretty much falling apart due to years of poor maintenance.
I've not given up on the Ex, and I won't. I just need more time (and parts, haha).
We're in kind of a screwed up spot in our lives. I'm devoting a lot of time caring for my wife (she's recovering from surgery), school starts in January, and funds are tight. The Excursion (obviously) isn't running yet, the Jeep is down hard (clogged cat, a massive intake leak and an electrical gremlin that took out a lot of sensors), and now I'm having issues with the truck.
The truck (the 99 SD on the left of my sig pic, 5.4) developed a couple transmission leaks when I was doing 3-hour round trips when my wife was in the hospital. I fixed the major leak, but still need to fix the pan gasket. I don't know how to explain it really, but it "feels" different now. Fluid doesn't look or smell burned, and I'm keeping a close eye on levels, but it's just different now, and occasionally shifts hard.
Also, for some reason, it kicked into super-rust-out mode over the last year. Bed supports are nearly gone, bed floor has more waves than a Beach Boys album. All 4 door bottoms are ate up, the driver rear won't open at all. The hood latch bolt grommets have pulled out of the radiator support, the hood is junk, grille support is trashed, the windshield has started leaking at the top and it has recently developed an obnoxious exhaust leak (I'm suspecting the EGR tube where the DPFE sensor tubes are welded on). Oh, and the bench seat back fabric split right where my waist line is, making it pretty uncomfortable after about 15 minutes.
The good points are: I have put a lot of care, time and money into the front steering system and brakes, and I've kept on top of engine maintenance. The truck does have a bit of sentimental value- when I was freshly divorced, down on my luck, and just starting over with everything (including a new job), I pulled off purchasing this thing right out of thin air- months of eating nothing but Ramen and bologna and having zero social life.
So now I'm at a decision point. I can do one of two things:
1. Put the Excursion on hold even longer and try to repair all of the things ailing the truck, or
2. Strip the parts off of the truck to put the Excursion on the road- because it has 99% of the stuff the Excursion needs.
I know this is the Excursion part of the forum, and it'd be easy to just collectively yell "EXCURSION," but I'm looking for reason to go along with it- other peoples' reason. This is too difficult for me to handle logically, as I have a personal attachment to the truck, and the Excursion has been my "dream car" ever since they came out.
What are your opinions?
That is a hard decision to make. I don't know if I could ever get rid of either of them. I too have some sentimental value in my truck as it was the first vehicle that I had bought outright.
If you could swing it I would try and save the truck. We can keep trying to help source parts for the Excursion. I am getting ready to sell the house and I will be packing up the barn and may come across some super duty or excursion parts I may be able to send your way.
Getting to this thread to find out more about the 12A581 Harness.
How hard is it to separate the Excursion Specific wiring from this harness?
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...superduty.html
I see mention of this harness going towards the rear of the vehicle, I thought this harness just goes across the engine bay.
I'm going to need one of these harnesses for a 2001.
Unfortunately, I only got to enjoy this "newness" for exactly ONE WEEK. My wife was on her way to school with it last week when it suddenly lost oil pressure and died. We got it towed home and I started looking into it- the engine is LOCKED.
So here's the scenario- Although I'm 44, I decided to go back to school for automotive (which is why I've been seemingly quiet lately). I go to school in the A.M. and my wife goes to school in the P.M. Two times a week, our schedules overlap by a half-hour, which made it pretty interesting getting us where we need to be with just the truck. Now we don't have that...
Some good news to stick in here- there is a program within my VA Voc Rehab that I can qualify for in emergencies- it's a $1000 loan that gets paid back out of my monthly disability at $100/month. We're going to take advantage of that to get her Wrangler fixed. And now, I'm going to be concentrating on the Excursion, since it will be a lot easier to get back on the road than the truck.
So here's the plan- the truck is going to have to donate what it can to the Excursion. That's going to save me quite a bit up-front on the Excursion. I'm still going to have to get a throttle body for the Ex, since the V10 TB is different than the V8 TB on the truck.
Question time-
1) If I refrain from towing or driving hard, can I use the V8 radiator to get me by until, say, spring?
2) is the engine fan the same between the V8 and V10? Or, if the clutch is different, is the blade the same (a couple of my V10 blades are melted).
3) Is the MAF sensor the same?
4) Is the filter box the same? I have the V10 intake tube, but not the filter box.
I *think* I have about everything else covered as to what will swap and what won't... Oh, except for the fan shroud. If not, I'll ask, of course. As for the future of the truck- it's still that sentimental value thing, so she'll be replacing the Ex as the project vehicle/yard ornament. I'll likely (in the future) try to find a heavily-damaged-but-running V10 or diesel and swap everything over- getting rid of the 99-only wiring in the process. But that's a bit off in the distance right now.
Looking forward to your answers- It's time to bring her back!
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Since you are at a point with the truck and Excursion have you thought about cannibalizing it entirely for the Excursion?
1) Washer reservoir & hoses because the heat had deformed the neck of the old one.
2) Starter solenoid- just in case & because I know the truck's solenoid is good.
3) Vacuum tank thingie- might have an issue here- the Ex's tank has 1 pair of ports and the truck's tank has 2 pair of ports.
4) Vacuum hoses- some issues here as well- there seems to be more lines on the truck than the Ex (this goes hand-in-hand with the extra ports on the tank). I need to figure out where all the vacuum hoses go on the V10. Also, the vacuum line that runs down between the fender and the blower motor- the Ex has 2 lines (black and white) and the truck had 1 line (black). Is it safe to say the black lines are the same between vehicles, and the white has something to do with the rear HVAC on the Ex?
5) I may have wasted my time on this one- I switched out the hub solenoid BEFORE remembering that I'll be using the manual hubs. Oh well.
6) I pulled the hood insulation and latch bar off of the damaged truck hood & stuck them on the Ex. I think I'm gonna hold out with the beat-up Ex hood until I can find a used one of the same color.
7) Switched over both dipsticks, since the handles were melted. Seems to be some crispy crud in the oil dipstick tube, so I'll probably rob that off the truck as well.
8 ) Swiped the charcoal canister as well.
I haven't removed the fan yet, but just looking at it, it looks to be the same as the Ex fan. I'll look closer once I get it off the truck. If they are the same, I'll probably use the Ex's clutch with the truck's blades.
I'm concerned about the PS pump though- it's pretty much been sitting open since the day I got it. I might change it over from the truck just for peace of mind.
I also have to keep a wire brush between the crossbar and the hood- that way it catches the safety latch, but doesn't latch all the way. This is because I haven't found a hood latch cable yet. I don't really want to take the one off the truck, I'd rather have one on both for ease of opening the hood. If I haven't found one by the time it's running, I'll rob it then.
It appears that the fan clutches are exactly the same. The fans are different though. The V8 has 10 blades and the V10 has 8 blades. Although they are the same diameter, the pitch at the ends look a little different as well.
As far as the intake plenum tubing and filter housing, it looks like the tube is the only thing different. The filter housing bolts in place, the V10 tube attaches in the correct location, and the V8's MAF sensor goes in like it belongs there.
Question- the vacuum ports on the side of the angled intake spacer- do I have this right... two ports in the rear, top goes to brake booster, bottom goes to small vacuum tubing. The port towards the front (with the small coolant hookups) goes to PCV valve. Correct?
I'm not sure I can use the small tubing from the truck- the truck had more lines and one of them is too long fro where it needs to go on the V10. I'm not sure how I would cut and seal the unwanted lines or shorten the one that is too long (the truck had the EGR system and the Ex does not).
The fans ARE different, as I stated before.
WHAT I DID: I went ahead and mounted the V8 fan to the V10 clutch. I also installed the V8 radiator. I had to- I need wheels ASAP. I also cut 4-1/2 inches off of the engine-side of the V8 fan shroud to make it work with the V10 (did the same with the upper radiator hose). It might not be the optimal setup, but it'll do the job for now.
I NEED SOMEONE TO GIVE ME A RUNDOWN ON ALL THE PORTS ON THE THROTTLE BODY ELBOW. I'm not confident I have these right.
Also, is there a way to splice those small plastic vacuum lines?
