I absolutely can't stand nitrous. Your prooving jack didly squat by beating someone with a spray bottle. Put some muscle into your engine and then race and beat someone. In my town, when you beat someone with NOS - you "wussy whipped" them. Big friggin' deal.
yeah you're right. 4.2L's can beat 5.4's any day. i do it a lot actually. it seems theyre slow because of the automatic tranny. just get a good start off the line and wave them goodbye.
I just got an '03 F150 supercab with the 4.2 and am a little disappointed with the torque. I just got the truck on Saturday and have driven it about 400 miles (I bought it out of town). I'm about to drop in a K & N air filter, seemed to help a bit with my '01 3.0 6cyl Ranger. Can anyone give me some ideas beyond that - short of putting on a cat-back system? I just spent $700 on Michelins (came with crappy-*** Generals on it), and am looking for cheap but effective upgrades. Any help would be appreciated!
Basically 4.2's have cruddy low end torque (stock), but great high end power. Unless you get a really descent start, you're not gonna take a 5.4 off the line. But in the quarter mile you'll leave them heartbroken.
From what I've heard, exhaust, air intakes, and "some chips" are the best cost effective ways of gaining power.
hey talley. how fast are we in stock trim. you say 5.4's run 15.7 to 16.0. well if theyre that fast then i must run a 15.3 or something. i raced one before that had flowmaster exhaust and a kn filter and i beat it ny like 2-3 car lenghts. he wanted a rematch and i took him twice more. and im stock. so how fast are we or how slow are they?
the 4.2 has 205 hp @ 4950 rpm and 255 torque @3700 rpm (stock) which is pretty good for that moter, you can take that moter and put a good set of gears behind it and do some *** kicken with your truck, put like 3.73 gears in and you can get from 0-60 quickly and have a decent top end. then do some mods like e fans, the stock fan is waisting alot of hp from useing the belts also try porting and polishing the heads that get some more hp
While the dealership had my 5.4L F-250 for some work they let me use a new super cab F-150 with a 4.2L automatic.
The first thing I noticed was the engine was rough as a chain saw compared to the 5.4L. The second thing was the lack of torque and acceleration.
So all things being equal, both trucks new, unmodified, automatic, super cabs even though the F-250 weighs more there is no way the 4.2L I drove could keep up with the 5.4L.
When SVT picked an engine to modify for the Lightning it wasn't the 4.2 or even the V-10 they went for the 5.4L V8!
For one, with thae 4.2 they gave ya, that is an exptended cab, rather slow, lot of more weight, most of us have a reg cab shortbed, cheap full-size...and you may have gotten a lemon, that me be why they let you drive it. I kow my 4.2 if it cannot keep up with it, it is not far off, but i am tryin to swap to a 5.4 as we speak....more petential, especially with a 5spd behind it.
