I have a regular cab '03 F150 XL Sport with the 4.2L, and I absolutely smoked a 5.4L. One of my friends has a 5.4L and we raced from 0, and then we raced from about 40. When we went from 40 I left him pretty badly. From 0, he actually put up a better fight. Also, he had an extended cab. more weight...
He wanted to put money on the race, but I had none to begin with...lol should have bet him!
From what I hear the 4.6L is not any better than either engine. It has like18 more horses, but I've heard it really is no different. I've never driven one, and I've never raced one, so I can't be too sure.
Part of the reason I want to go to a 5.4L is the potential, I look alot into potential, not what it comes with from the factory.
But my dad has a 4.6L in his S/C it has decent power, my uncle has a 5.4L in his 250, way to small for that size truck, I know I could take that thing on any day.
Yea, Good thing about a 5.4 liter is the amount of upgrades for it verses the 4.2 liter. Also, you get more power per upgrade with it! You can't beat that.
Not sure how they could know it was a "lemon" when it only had 6 miles on it.
The question was could a 4.2 outrun a 5.4 and the answer is no, new vs new, unmodified. Less horsepower and torque does not win races unless the vehicles are totally different.
Can a stripped reg cab 2wd F-150 5-speed 4.2 outrun a loaded F-250 4wd supercab automatic 5.4? Probably, but telling everyone the 4.2 (engine) is faster than a 5.4 based on such a "race" would be inaccurate.
Then again the above 4.2 truck can't tow 8000lbs, seat 6 or drive through deep mud, sand off rd etc. rerun the race under those conditions...
Yea, the reason it can't is because it was never meant to.
Yes, the 5.4 definately has more power, but the 4.2 is definately quicker. That's the difference. I'm no Ford super-genius or anything, but when you put 1 truck against another and run them, you'll find out real quick who's faster. Now if you put a 4.2L Supercab up against a 5.4 supercab, the 4.2 will lose. I'm sure.
Same thing applies to a single cab. Put a 5.4L in my truck and have another exact replica of my truck with the 4.2 and race them... well yea, the 5.4 will win. My truck is lighter and brand new. That's why my truck would be quicker than a big supercab. It has nothing to do with power vs. power. The 5.4 is way more powerful than my truck will probably ever be. But it aint quicker...of that I can vouch for.
you guys are actually swapping engines from a 4.2 to a 5.4!?
I think that is awesome! I have been thinking about doing that, but dont know what i would have to do because I think that it would be very comlicated!
you would have to buy a new tranny, driveshaft, computer, harnesses, exhaust, radiator and the engine!
to me that sounds very expensive!!
I am interested in doing that still, so could you guys help me out with some of the details that you guys had to do to get the 5.4 to fit?
I do not know if I am ...I may not, I drove a 5.4 this weekend it was a dog. ANd the salesman at Ford did not believe me that my stock truck was faster. It is jsut that the 4.2 winds up quicker, and the 5spd helps out alot.
For some reason I'm thinking that the smaller engines are faster with less torque, and just the opposite for bigger ones. I've had a 4.2 v6 for a while and my dad had a 4.6 v8 and now a 5.4 and I could beat both with ease. It's pulling power completely towers over my truck so it's just a matter of purpose. If you're doing just speed I'd suggest a 4.2 over those bigger ones.

There is just as much upgrads to a 4.2 as there is to a 5.4 so that statement is false.
i have a new truck. Every time I look into something, the 4.6 and 5.4 have it, but mine doesn't. Therefore, the statement is not false. Maybe other trucks that are older with the V6 have it, but mine don't!
and talley, upgrades for a 4.6 and 5.4 net more gain per upgrade, and are cheaper to boot, and they are designed to maximize performance for that specific engine, unlike us who sometimes hafta look under a 3.8L tell me are headers for a 3.8 goin to flow as well as ones built FOR a 4.2 would? nope. again, 4.6 and 5.4 have more, better, and cheaper upgrades than the 4.2L
