So just to be clear about it, I could put pulleys, intakes, headers, so on and so forth on my engine from a 3.8? I figure electrical would be different, but as far as motor goes?
i do not know about the intake heads MAY be differant same with headers, but the pulleys should work for sure. i think ir emember being told the headers will aslo work, i i believe the intake will also adn eletrical should be same.
Our heads are the same as 3.8's and so are the cams etc... bottom end is the exact same except for we have a crank that has a 3.74" stroke and the 3.8 has a crank with 3.39" stroke and we have a smaller compression height measurement on our pistons...
Headers built for a 3.8 would flow great on our 4.2's... previously the only offerings for the 4.2 were JBA shorties which have 1 1/2" primaries while all of the 3.8 stuff have bigger 1 5/8" primaries which DO flow more.
I will agree with you that you gain more with equivelent mods on a 4.6 or 5.4 but I still say there are just as much mods you can do to our 4.2 as you can do to a 4.6 or 5.4
Maybe if I'm bored I'll print out a big list of what you can do to a 4.2... It's long!
If so can you guys help me out with any tips on how to make a 4.2L faster? ... faster than 4.8L CHEVY's?
Help! I want to beat 4.8L chevy's with the 4.2L and still keep the decent gas milage!
I am open to any suggestions!
i would second that. i have beaten 5.4 auto's. since we have the 5speed, we can take them off the line and thats all it takes. they will not catch up. its not even about power. its about the tranny.
That's awsome, I'm finding more parts now that I'm searching 3.8 Mustang engine stuff. I even found a throttle body that's "supposed" to bolt on 10 to 12 hp's! It's like $250 though. That sux! Thanx for the info Talley about the headers. Now I can see where you're coming from.
Is this possible?

Go try telling a 5.4L SVT Lightning owner your theory (it's not even about power, it's about the tranny) Lightnings have 5.4L automatics so you can beat him! Before you do let me place my bet on that race!
For that matter try running against a standard F-250 reg cab 2WD with the 5.4L 6-speed manual trans and 4:10 LSD.
You cannot beat the lightnings, but hte stock ones yes, after hearing this, trust me I went and tried....the only race I beet the Lightning in was a long distance...(15 miles) run from one town to the next...He took the interstate with traffic, I took the side road..with none. beet him by a full minute...he could only get up to 90...i was at 85....also he got caught up at the exit which slowed him down. he did beet me for the first mile down the stretch off base.
i have a 2000 4.2 single cab with cold air induction ,superchip blue chip, 70mm mass air flow sensor and true dual exuast with flowmasters........I have beat 2 different 5.4, 4.6 are no problem at all, dont know about 4.8 chevys but i bet it will at least be very close. what is done to yours right now.
3.8 stang parts are not the way to go. get a thunderbird supercoup motor and take the heads and supercharger off that. that will really boost the power
here ya go true 4.2 this is especially for you never pay them mag prices follow this link and get this throttle spacer for 80
